Category: Sow and Reap

Genesis 26:12-13
"Then Isaac sowed seed in that land and received in the same year a hundred times as much as he had planted, and the Lord favored him with blessings. And the man became great and gained more and more until he became very wealthy and distinguished. He owned stocks, herds, and a great supply of servants, and the Philistines envied him."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThere are several principles to be learned here. Whether it is harvest time or whether there is famine in the land, sowing is what helps us reap. If we don't sow, we won't reap. So if you expect to reap a harvest before you even sow a seed, then you're a fool! Nobody reaps without sowing. That includes sowing money for God, sowing money into a business, sowing time into business, etc. If, for example, you want to reap a good relationship with your spouse, then you have to sow into that relationship. Do what it takes to make the other person happy. If you want to reap a nice house, you have to put money aside and save for that nice house. So that's one principle laid out in these verses.

The second thing to notice is that Isaac received a hundred times as much as he planted. You have the right to expect a large harvest after you have sown. Whenever you sow a seed, you can have high expectations about your harvest. You don't sow just to get the seed back. You sow to get a hundred fold back, meaning a hundred times greater than the seed you sowed. That reaping is really the blessing of God. The sowing was not the blessing of God; the sowing was your decision. God will not sow for you and me. But God will bless the seed when we sow it in good ground.

The third principle to learn here is that the Lord will favor you with blessings. So you need the favor of God for this seed to succeed. That's why you need to sow, but you also need to pray. You also have to line yourself up with God. God will not bless you if you live in sin. If you hate somebody, if you don't walk in love, if you don't have good purposes and intentions, or if you keep bad company, then God cannot bless you. If you're sowing good seeds but you're doing sinful things, then you can't expect God's favor on your life. God shows favor when you do what God wants you to do. That's when He bestows blessing to the seed you have sown.

The fourth principle is found in verse 12b where it says, "And the man became great and gained more and more until he became very wealthy and distinguished." This indicates that there was a process. It takes time to become great; it takes time to become wealthy; it takes time to become distinguished. Being distinguished means that people are taking notice of you. People are seeing the favor of God upon your life. But don't expect to become rich overnight. Think of an actual garden. When you plant seeds, it takes months for vegetables to grow from that seed. Nothing in nature happens overnight, so nothing in your life will happen overnight.

I don't know anyone who won the lottery and still had the money ten years down the road. When people gain money so quickly, they often don't know how to keep it. But when people gain it little by little, they know how to save it. That's why the principle of giving tithes to the Lord is so important. That's why the principle of putting 20% aside for savings is so important.

So your harvest will take time. Even when you sowed into your relationships and you're expecting a good relationship with your spouse or children. It takes time. It takes time to develop success in your studies or your career. Just know that slowly but surely, you are going to become wealthy and great. Keep doing what God calls you to do and you will keep moving forward in life.
