Ezra 5:8
"…this work goes on with diligence and care and prospers in their hands."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiHere the children of Israel were building the temple and it's interesting that the reason it was prospering was because they built it with diligence and care. There is nothing that can prosper if you aren't diligent and careful. For example, my oldest daughter, Sara, is a very diligent girl. As a result, she is a very prosperous girl and she's successful in many things. Prosperity is the direct result of our diligence and careful work. That's why the Israelites' work was prospering. Prosperity here means that they were working on the temple, building it, and it was growing and making progress.

Now another important aspect of prosperity is found in the book of Nehemiah. When Nehemiah heard about what happened to his nation and how the wall was torn down, he began praying. He said, "O Lord, let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and the prayer of Your servants who delight to revere and fear Your name (Your nature and attributes); and prosper, I pray You, Your servant this day and grant him mercy in the sight of this man…" [Nehemiah 1:11]. According to this verse, what else can we understand about prosperity? Well, it says that God will grant you mercy in the sight of man. That is prosperity – when other people show favor to you.

So first, we see that prosperity is achieved through diligence and careful work. Then we see that prosperity is when other people are favorable towards you. Nehemiah 2:10b says, "that a man had come to inquire for and require the good and prosperity of the Israelites." People will take notice of your prosperity and people will become favorable towards you. But it's important to know that it is God who moves the hearts of people to show you favor.

It says in Nehemiah 2:19, "But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they laughed us to scorn and despised us and said, What is this thing you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?" So people were laughing at the Israelites and wanted to stop them from building the wall. But notice what Nehemiah says, "The God of heaven will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build…" [verse 20]. That is the fourth aspect of gaining prosperity – you have to stand strong against your adversaries. So no matter what anybody else says to you, you are to stand strong and complete the work that you began so God can prosper you. Regardless of what oppositions come or what anyone says, you are going to arise and build. That's why you are going to prosper.

So those are the four aspects of prosperity: diligence, careful work, favor, and completing the work regardless of what oppositions come against you. If you don't work, you won't prosper. If you're not diligent and careful in your work, you won't prosper. A part of prosperity is favor from others. Lastly, remember to have a "can do" mentality about your work. Despite all the challenges against you, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you [Philippians 4:13]. Through that, God will notice your efforts and will prosper your work.
