Category: The Goodness of God

Jeremiah 31:12b-15
"They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion and shall flow together and be radiant with joy over the goodness of the Lord – for the corn, for the juice [of the grape], for the oil, and for the young of the flock, and the herd. And their life shall be like a watered garden, and they shall not sorrow or languish any more at all. Then will the maidens rejoice in the dance, and the young men and old together. For I will turn their mourning into joy and will comfort them, and make them rejoice over their sorrow. I will satisfy fully the life of the priests with abundance [of offerings shared with them], and My people will be satisfied with My goodness, says the Lord."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a word of God given to the people who were in exile. These passages describe God's goodness to them. It says in verse 12b that God is going to give them corn, juice of the grape, oil, and the young of the flock. In other words, God is going to give them food to eat. There will be nothing lacking. That provision of food is what will bring them joy. God is the One who will satisfy them, and His provision of food to eat is the evidence of divine blessing.

When was the last time that you thanked God for giving you food to eat? Often people are unhappy because they don't have fancy cars, big houses, or expensive clothes. But they don't realize that God has always been blessing them. If they have always had food to eat, then they have always experienced the goodness of God. These verses show that the goodness of God is His provision. It also says in verse 13b, "For I will turn their mourning into joy and will comfort them, and make them rejoice over their sorrow." So the goodness of God will bring you joy and comfort, and you won't remember your sorrows anymore.

Growing up, I was always hungry as a little boy because my father was a drunkard and a gambler and He always gambled our money away. But since I became a Christian, there has not been one day that I have been hungry because God has always provided for me. When you follow God's ways, He ensures that you earn enough to provide for what you need. But it doesn't mean that we shouldn't desire to grow. We should always desire to grow. We should always pray to have more, so we can help others. But if you have even food to eat, that is reason enough to thank God and rejoice in His goodness.

People are always looking for God to do great things all at once. But God is doing great things for us everyday. Every time you have food to eat, you are experiencing the goodness of God in your life. So never forget that. Thank God for the simple things in life. Thank God for food in your fridge, clean water to drink, clothes to wear, and the opportunity to hear God's Word. All of those things are expressions of God's goodness, so thank Him for His goodness.
