Jeremiah 31:33
"But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel: After those days, says the Lord, I will put My law within them, and on their hearts will I write it; and I will be their God, and they will be My people."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis passage is one of the most beautiful passages found in the book of Jeremiah. This Scripture is about a new covenant, a new agreement that God is going to make with His people. In the German translation (Hoffnung fuer Alle, which means, ‘hope for all'), verse 33b says, "I will write My law in their hearts, which is to determine their entire way of thinking and feeling." Then verse 34 says in the German translation, "I will forgive their sins and not think about them anymore." So that new covenant or that new relationship that God is going to establish with His people is going to be built on forgiveness of sins. That is how we gain access to God –through forgiveness of sins. We can go to our Father in prayer, and we can gain understanding through the Scriptures because He has forgiven us of our sins. Based on that forgiveness, we can come closer to God. God will never reject us.

When we try to keep the Ten Commandments in our own strength and energy, we often fail because it's not natural to us. But in this verse, we read that God promised He would make a new covenant with us. He promised He would make a new relationship with us, and He was going to write that law on our hearts.

Now that I have been a Christian for over fourty years, I have read the Bible 28 times from cover to cover. Through the years, I have learned that if I do what God has instructed me to do in His Word, then everything will be well with me. Everything I want to prosper will prosper, such as my marriage, my family, my ministry, etc. It is because I have read God's Word and have obeyed it.

So let's read more about this new covenant that God has made. Verse 28b says, "…so will I watch over them to build and to plant [with good], says the Lord." But it's important that you and I do our part as well. The moment that you invite Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savior, He sends His Holy Spirit to live inside of you. That Holy Spirit communicates with your spirit and tells you to read the Word of God, speak the Word of God, and practice the Word of God. Because you are primarily a spiritual being and your spirit was risen alive when you accepted Christ into your heart, obeying God's Spirit now becomes natural to you. The Spirit of God within you shapes you and molds you when you submit to that Spirit. When you submit to the Spirit of God, you'll know who God is.

We cannot do what God wants us to do in our own strength. That's why He gives us that forgiveness of sins. Once He does, He gives us the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit, He writes His law upon our hearts, and that's how we begin desiring the things God desires for us. Just as the German translation says, the law of God should determine our entire way of thinking and feeling. So before you do something, line that action up with the Word of God. God's law should determine our lifestyles. Make the Word of God the umpire of your mind, and you'll never go wrong.
