SKILLS AND ABILITY

Date: January 6

Category: Leadership

1 Chronicles 15:22
"Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in singing, was put in charge of carrying the ark and lifting up song. He instructed about these matters because he was skilled and able."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is another Scripture about the qualities of a good leader. This was a Chenaniah who was in charge of carrying the ark and lifting up song. He was the one responsible for leading worship, much like a worship leader in churches today. Not only was he in charge of the music, but he was also the one who instructed others to learn what he already knew how to do. It says in this verse that "he was skilled and able." That's why he was instructing others. Before you can teach others, you need to have a skill or ability yourself. If you don't have either of those, then you cannot teach somebody else. To gain skills and ability, you need to work hard and practice. You can't become a skillful person overnight. If, for example, you want to become a piano player, you have to practice. Once you become skillful in it, then you can teach someone else to play the piano. But you've got to gain your own skills first – understanding the notes, the keys, the fingering and all that's needed to be a good pianist. If, for example, you want to become a builder, you have to know about construction, finances, materials, framing, dry walling and electrical things. When you become knowledgeable in that and you become a skillful builder, then you can teach somebody else how to build.

If, for example, you want to become a minister, you have to have a heart for God and a heart for people. You have to go to Bible College, study theology, know how to work with people, etc. If you want to be a skillful spouse, then you have to learn the differences that exist between spouses and appreciate those differences and serve one another. If you want to be a successful parent, then you have to know how children function, how you are to love them, how you are to correct and discipline them, etc.

So, nobody becomes a leader overnight. It takes time and effort. It takes willingness. That often means that you have to deny yourself of some things in order to complete the task at hand. Do you want to be a leader? This is how you get there – by skill and ability. Nobody becomes a leader just by sitting around. So let's do our best and become the best that we can. Never be satisfied with laziness. Always have a goal in front of you and work towards achieving that goal, and know that God is going to be with you every step of the way.
