Matthew 17:5
"While he was still speaking, behold a shining cloud [composed of light] overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, this is My Son, My Beloved, with Whom I am [and have always been] delighted. Listen to Him!"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn this chapter, we read about Jesus revealing Himself to three of His special disciples, Peter, James, and John – the pillars of the church. Jesus was more than just a mere man, and He wanted to show them that there was more to Him than just His humanity. In Matthew 16:16 we read, "Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." So Peter, by the revelation of the Holy Spirit, recognized that this Jesus who they had been following was the Christ (the Messiah) who was prophesied by the Old Testament prophets. Then in Matthew 16:17b we read Jesus' response to Peter, "For flesh and blood [men] have not revealed this to you, but My Father Who is in heaven." In other words, the Heavenly Father through His Holy Spirit had revealed this revelation to Peter concerning Jesus' divine nature.

Now in Matthew 17:1, Jesus invites these three disciples to follow Him up on a high mountain. Then in verse 2 we read, "And His appearance underwent a change in their presence; and His face shone clear and bright like the sun, and His clothing became as white as light." At that point, Moses and Elijah, two prophets from the Old Testament appeared and began talking with Jesus. We know that Moses died but no one knows where his body is, and we know that Elijah didn't die because he was caught up into heaven.

Then in verse 4 we read that Peter spoke to Jesus and offered to put up three booths, one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. Then we come to our verse from today, verse 5, "While he was still speaking, behold a shining cloud [composed of light] overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, This is My Son, My Beloved, with Whom I am [and have always been] delighted. Listen to Him!" There was a tremendous light from heaven that was brighter than daylight. And behind a cloud spoke a voice from heaven, which was the voice of our Heavenly Father.

The signs and wonders that Jesus performed on the earth, such as miracles of healing, pointed to His divinity. In addition the Holy Spirit testifying through Peter that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God also pointed to His divinity. But not only that, now in this verse, we read that God the Father sent His voice from heaven saying, "This is My Son, My beloved, with Whom I am [and have always been] delighted." So we can see here that God approved of Jesus. God was pleased with His Son. This is a true revelation of Jesus' divine nature. Jesus was more than just a man. He is truly the Son of God.

But what is the reason for this revelation? Why did Jesus lead these disciples up the mountain? Why did the Father speak from heaven? Well verse 5b says, "Listen to Him!" God wants you and I today to listen to the words of Jesus. He wants us to bring Christ into every area of our lives. As we venture on any endeavor, God wants us to venture based on the words of Jesus.

For example, children are to respond to their parents the way Jesus would want. Parents are to relate to their children the way Jesus would want. Spouses are to deal with each other the way Jesus teaches. Employees are to relate to their employers the way Jesus would desire. Everything we do in life should be in line with the words and instructions of Jesus. Jesus should be the supreme authority over what we hear, what we speak, what we believe, and what we do in our lives. He should have the first and last words in our lives, along with every other word in between. That is what the Heavenly Father desires of us. That's why He has given us this revelation concerning the divine nature of Jesus.

A very good question to ask yourself when you're faced with anything in life is "What would Jesus do?" Then you will follow through and do what Jesus would have done in your circumstance. Just as God the Father has spoken, "Listen to Him!" we should listen. This is a commandment from God. It's not an option or a suggestion. God is instructing us to listen to the words of His Son Jesus, who is God Himself. So today, let's recognize that Jesus is more than just man. He is even more than just our Savior. He is our Lord, meaning He rules and reigns in our hearts. So everything that Jesus speaks we should listen to and obey because that is what the Father has instructed us to do.
