THE GOLDEN RULE

Date: September 13

Category: Godly Character

Matthew 7:12
"So then, whatever you desire that others would do to you and for you, even so do also to and for them, for this is (sums up) the Law and the Prophets."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is the "golden rule" of behavior. If you don't know how to relate to people, this is the rule to follow. It says here that whatever you want others to do for you then you are to do those things for them. In our hearts, we should all desire to help others. You may not know how to help others or you may not know what their needs or interests are. But in such cases, apply the golden rule. If you don't know how to help others, just ask yourself what you would like others to do for you. For example, if you want people to speak nice things to you, then you are to speak nice things to them. If you want people to do nice things for you, then you are to do nice things for them.

This is especially important in marriage. If a husband doesn't know how to show his wife love, then he can ask himself how he would like to be treated in the marriage. If he wants to be praised and appreciated, then he needs to praise and appreciate his wife. Also, a good husband would take the time to ask his wife how she best understands love. My wife and I have been married since 1984 and once in awhile I will ask her, "How have I expressed love to you since we've been married?" Then she will tell me. That's how I learn to express love to my wife. So we have to learn from our spouses how to relate love to one another.

It says here that "whatever you desire that others would do to and for you, even so do also to and for them." But the same is true for the opposite. Whatever you don't want others to do to you, then you shouldn't do those things to them. If there are certain things that you don't like, then chances are others won't like them either. So if you don't like to be talked down to, then don't talk others down. If you don't like to be gossiped about, then don't gossip about others.

The Message Bible translates this verse as, "Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them. Add up God's Law and Prophets and this is what you get." I like how it says here that we are to grab the initiative and do it for them. Don't just sit around and wait for others to come to you. You are to get up and grab the initiative and do it for them. If you want someone to bless you, then you make the decision to bless someone else. Some of the most miserable people in the world are the people who are selfish, the ones who only think of themselves. They are the people who are always expecting things to be done for them, but they never do anything for others. The best way to come out of that unhappiness is to bless someone else. Express love to others and then others will express love to you. Love is the most characteristic and comprehensive act of human experience. God has called us to love, and that love is proactive, meaning it involves action. Love seeks the opportunity to express itself and then it does it.

The last part of verse 12 says, "for this is (sums up) the Law and the Prophets." The German translation, Hoffnung fuer Alle, (which means, ‘hope for all') says, "Captured in brief, the content of the entire Holy Scriptures is in that commandment." So the Bible in its entire context is trying to teach us this simple, golden rule. We are to do for others what we would want them to do for us. So after reading this verse, you no longer have to wonder what you should do for others. All you have to do is ask yourself what you would like people to do for you. Once you figure that out, then you are to take the initiative and commit that action to someone else. Love is the highest level of human existence. God, who has expressed His love to us through His Son Jesus, now wants us to express that love towards others. So today, let's allow ourselves to become channels of God's love as we find ways to distribute that love toward others. As we do that, we can be sure that the same love we've expressed will be expressed back to us in return. After all, that is the "golden rule."
