ASK, SEEK, AND KNOCK

Date: September 12

Category: God Answers

Matthew 7:7-8
"Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you. For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, [the door] will be opened."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIf you want to have family devotionals at home but you don't know what to study, read the Sermon on the Mount, passage by passage. When you finish that, then take the Ten Commandments and study one commandment per day. When you finish the Ten Commandments, then open the Book of Proverbs and read one chapter every day. After you've finished that, you can go back and do it all over again. The Sermon on the Mount, the Ten Commandments, and the book of Proverbs contain wonderful teachings of wisdom that we can impart into our children.

Our study verses today have been taken from the Sermon on the Mount. It says here, "Keep on asking…keep on seeking…keep on knocking." One thing to notice here is that these verses have been written in an imperative mood, which is a command form. So this is a command from the Lord. Another thing to notice is that these verses have been written in present tense. In our language, present tense verbs represent a continuous action. In other words, what Jesus is commanding us to do here is not something we just do once; it's something we have to do continually.

In our lives, there may be some things that we don't understand or there may be things that we would like to have. God wants us to ask Him for those things. He also wants us to ask people as well. When we need assistance, prayer, guidance, and help, God wants us to ask. But not just that, we are to keep on asking. Then it will be given to us. It says in verse 8a, "For everyone who keeps on asking receives." You will not receive anything if you don't ask for it. Even Jesus, the Son of God, had to pray and ask the Father for things. So we have to ask as well. If we want God to do something in our lives, we have to ask Him.

Then it says that God wants us to keep on seeking and we will find. You might have lost something or you might be looking for something new. God wants us to keep on seeking for it. It says in verse 8b, "and he who keeps on seeking finds." So if there's something that you're seeking after, keep on seeking. Don't give up because eventually you will find it. For example, if you are seeking after happiness, then keep on seeking for it in the right places and eventually you will find it.

The answers to many of our questions can be found in the Word of God. That's why it's so important to seek through the Scriptures and study the Word until we find the answer to our questions. Sometimes it can be instantaneously; other times it might take months or even years to get an answer. Some questions might only get answered when we're in heaven. But God says here that we are to seek because if we keep on seeking then we will find.

Then it says that God wants us to keep on knocking. Verse 8c says, "and to him who keeps on knocking, [the door] will be opened." Let's say, for example, you want to get accepted into a college. First, you have to apply, but you have to apply to several schools, not just one. Keep on applying and eventually a door will open for you. Let's say you want a job. You shouldn't just apply to one job; you should apply to several jobs. Keep on applying and sending in your resume and a door will open for you. Even if rejection comes, God wants us to keep on knocking. As we do that continually, then a door will open.

This is a promise from God. Jesus tells us that we are to keep on asking, keep on seeking, and keep on knocking. Those are actions that we need to do if we want to receive anything in life. But those are continuous actions, meaning we are to constantly do them. When we do that, then eventually an answer will come. Eventually we will find what we're looking for. Eventually a door will open for us. But persistence is key if you want to be successful in life. So don't just ask once and then give up. Keep on asking; keep on seeking; and keep on knocking. Continue doing what you need to do and God will bless you.
