OBEDIENCE BETTER THAN SACRIFICE

Date: August 26

Category: Follow God

Hosea 6:6
"For I desire and delight in dutiful steadfast love and goodness, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of and acquaintance with God more than burnt offerings."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis verse reveals a wonderful truth to us. That's why God repeats Himself twice here. Sometimes when Jesus taught the disciples, He would say, "Verily, verily," which means "Amen, amen." In other words, the things that Jesus is about to speak are very important. Repetition is used for emphasis. If you and I always talk about something, others can tell that the subject we're always talking about is very important to us. So if we want to know what is important to God, then we have to see what He repeats in His Word to us again and again.

This verse here is recorded in the book of Hosea, but we read a similar passage in the book of Samuel. The first king of Israel, Saul was supposed to wait for Samuel to come and sacrifice the offering and bless the Israelites before they went into battle. But instead of waiting, Saul became fearful and decided to offer the sacrifice himself, which he wasn't allowed to do. So just as he was offering the sacrifice, Samuel came. That's where we read in 1 Samuel 15:22, "Samuel said, Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams." So obedience is better than sacrifice. This is very similar to our verse today in Hosea 6:6.

God desires for us to have a relationship with Him more than He desires for offerings and sacrifices. He wants to spend time with us. He isn't so much concerned with what we can give Him. He's more concerned about having our hearts. When we spend time in God's presence, reading His Word and praying, then we start to become more like Him. We start transforming more and more into the image of Christ. When that happens, then we will start expressing our dutiful steadfast love and goodness towards God and other people. Having a proper relationship with God and a proper relationship with people is far more important to God than bringing sacrifices to Him.

Actually if we read 1 Samuel 15:23 it says, "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim (household good luck images). Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king." So when we don't walk in obedience and we rebel against God or we walk in stubbornness, then that is like witchcraft and idolatry. That is like worshipping another god. Disobeying the Lord and not having a relationship with Him will only lead us away from God. When we determine to go our own way, then that is like getting involved in witchcraft or idolatry. It's sin and God has no choice but to back away from our lives.

If God backs away, then certain things will begin to happen that we may not be happy about. Things begin going wrong in our lives. But when things go wrong, we can't blame God. We were the ones who turned away from Him. It's time to come back to the Lord and reconcile that relationship with Him. We have to spend time with God and know Him personally. That's why reading His Word is so important. There is no way you can increase in the knowledge of God if you don't read the Word of God. The way you get to know a friend is by spending time with them, talking to them, and listening to them. We get to know God the same way. We talk to Him through prayer, and He talks to us through the Word.

That close relationship with God is what He desires from you. Your heart is the best gift you could give God. It's the same thing in marriage. A wife doesn't just want the nice gifts and the pretty flowers; she wants the husband. A husband can buy his wife all the great things of life, but if he never gives her his heart, then there will always be something missing in the relationship. It's the same with parents. You could give your children all the new toys they want, but if you don't give them time and attention, then there will always be something lacking. So God wants our hearts. When He has our hearts, then He has our obedience. That obedience is more important to God than any offering or sacrifice we could ever give to Him. So always remember: obedience is far better than sacrifice.
