SOW INTO RIGHTEOUSNESS

Date: August 25

Category: Follow God

Hosea 10:12-13
"Sow for yourselves according to righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God); reap according to mercy and loving-kindness. Break up your uncultivated ground, for it is time to seek the Lord, to inquire for and of Him, and to require His favor, till He comes and teaches you righteousness and rains His righteous gift of salvation upon you. You have plowed and plotted wickedness, you have reaped the [willful] injustice [of oppressors], you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your [own] way and your chariots, in the multitude of your mighty men."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiHosea served as a prophet around the same time that Amos and Jonah were prophesying, which was around 700 BC. If we continue reading on in this chapter, we can see that God is preparing the destruction of Israel by the northern king of Syria, Shalmaneser because of the way the Israelites were living. At the time, there was a social injustice in the land. The people plotted wickedness and evilness. They were not relating to people in a just way. Instead, they were oppressing them. They didn't worship God; they worshipped other gods. As a result, God promised them punishment and destruction.

It says in verse 13b, "Because you have trusted in your [own] way and your chariots, in the multitude of your mighty men." So God was punishing them because they didn't trust in Him. They were trusting in their own strength. They had the sin of pride, the primeval sin. So that's why in verse 12, Hosea the prophet warns the Israelites to change their ways. It says in verse 12a, "Sow for yourselves according to righteousness…" In other words, the prophet was telling them not to be wicked anymore, but to sow into righteousness.

But how do we do that? How do we sow into righteousness? Well we have to be in right standing with God. Today, we do that by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, confessing our sins to Him and allowing His blood to wash us clean. Secondly, we come into right standing with God by obeying the Word of God. The Word of God is very important because it teaches us how to conduct our lives properly. That's why we have to read it, meditate upon it, speak it, and obey it. Each of those four components is important in order to know how to be in right standing with God.

Then in verse 12 we read, "Break up your uncultivated ground, for it is time to seek the Lord, to inquire for and of Him, and to require His favor…" So if we have been going our own way or trusting in our own strength, then now is the time to stop. Now is the time to seek the Lord. That means inquiring for Him and requiring His favour. When we have the favour of God, we can withstand anything. It's similar to what we read in James 4:7, "So be subject to God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you." The devil's job is to offer you suggestions, ideas, and thoughts that are contrary to the Word of God. But if you have the Word in your heart, then you will be subject to God and resist the devil. When you do that, he'll have to flee from you.

But if you don't know the Word of God, then when the devil comes with his own thoughts and ideas, you won't be able to distinguish the difference. You need to know the truth so that you can recognize the lie. That's why you need to know the Word of God. Then it says in James 4:8a, "Come close to God and He will come close to you." So God has already done everything that He needs to do for us to experience the fullness of God in our lives. Now how much of His fullness we actually experience is really up to us.

So we read in Hosea 10:12 that now is the time to seek the Lord. Then it says, "till He comes and teaches you righteousness and rains His righteous gift of salvation upon you." You cannot live in an unrighteous way and expect the gift of salvation in your life. That gift is righteous, so it can only come to someone who is living in a righteous way. So when we do our part, God will always do His part. God will bring the righteous gift of salvation to us if we live righteously before Him.

It says in John 10:10b, "I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)." God wants us to have life in abundance, but He cannot force that life upon us. How much of the fullness of God we experience is really our choice. So today, let's sow into righteousness and let's receive life overflowing!
