LIGHT THAT SHINES FOREVER

Date: August 23

Category: Faith Expressed Through Actions

Daniel 11:33a, 12:3
"And they who are wise and understanding among the people shall instruct man and make them understand… And the teachers and those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness (to uprightness and right standing with God) [shall give forth light] like the stars forever and ever."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiDaniel lived approximately from the years of 605-530 BC. He had several divine dreams and visions during his lifetime. His visions covered the period of Nebuchadnezzar, the period of Medo-Persia, and even to the king of Greece. Beyond that, his visions also extended towards revealing the everlasting kingdom that is to be established. So Daniel had a long career during the Babylonian and Medo-Persian times. But a significant interpretation that Daniel made was the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dream concerning the rise and fall of worldly kingdoms. One event that he described was of Antioch Epiphanes IV (175-164 B.C.), who would rule and abominate the temple by bringing in a pig. Many godly people would have to run and flee from this godless ruler.

Here in verse 33a Daniel says, "And they who are wise and understanding among the people shall instruct man and make them understand…" In other words, those who were wise with knowledge would teach those who didn't understand in order that they would have understanding. Then we read in Daniel 12:3, "And the teachers and those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness (to uprightness and right standing with God) [shall give forth light] like the stars forever and ever." So these wise teachers were a light that would shine brightness to the people, leading them to righteousness. In other words, they were to help many people become upright before God and not to worship in a desecrated manner.

Really, they were to lead people to the proper knowledge and lifestyle of a believer. That's why it says that they will give forth light and shine like the stars forever and ever. It's very similar to what we would do today when we tell others about Jesus Christ. We teach others about God and how they can have eternal salvation through Christ. We, who know the truth, are leading the others towards righteousness. So that means that we too will shine our light forever.

Actually in Matthew 13:43a we read, "Then will the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with God) shine forth like the sun in the kingdom of their Father…" Also we read in Matthew 5:14-16, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a peck measure, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven."

In other words, the light that shines in this world is the light that is within each and every one of us who are believers in Christ. That is light that comes from our moral excellence and our praiseworthy and noble good deeds. Good deeds are beneficial things that we do for someone else. When we do things to help others, they will see those deeds and it says here that they will glorify God in heaven, who they know we glorify. So both our character and our actions are used to lure people to the Lord. For example, when you are trying to catch a fish, you often use bait – something to lure that fish. Our lifestyle is supposed to lure people towards Christ.

Not only that, but we learned from the verses in Daniel that our teaching will help them understand as well. So our teaching from the Word and our actions in obedience to the Word are what will draw people to the Lord. Our desire should always be to win souls. That's something that should be on our minds everywhere we go. We, who are wise because we believe in Christ, should now work towards leading others to understanding as well. And that is sharing with them the Gospel of salvation through Christ. That's what makes us the light of the world that shines forever. When we begin to convey Christ in our words and our deeds, then the world will see that and they will glorify God as well.
