Daniel 2:20-22
"Daniel answered, Blessed be the name of God forever and ever! For wisdom and might are His! He changes the times and the seasons; He removes the kings and sets up kinds. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding! He reveals the deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him!"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiKing Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon was the one who destroyed the southern kingdom of Judah and took the people into exile. That's where he found Daniel. At one point, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream, which seemed to have troubled his spirit. So in verse 2 it says, "Then the king commanded to call the magicians, the enchanters or soothsayers, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans [diviners], to tell the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king." Now all these people insisted that the king describe his dream first before they attempted to interpret it. But the king refused. He said that if they could truly interpret dreams, then they would already know what the dream was about. So none of them could help the king. As a result, they were being killed one after another.

Then there was tremendous pressure upon Daniel to interpret the king's dream otherwise he and his three companions would be killed as well. In verse 18, we read that Daniel and his three friends went into prayer together. As they were praying and as Daniel sought the Lord, God revealed to him the answer to the king's dream. In verse 19 we read, "Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven." So as soon as God revealed the secret to Daniel, he thanked the Lord. In verse 20b it says, "For wisdom and might are His!" Daniel acknowledged that all wisdom and all might belong to God.

Not only does wisdom and might belong to God, but verse 21a says, "He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and sets up kingsā€¦" In other words, God is the Lord of time. He determines what will happen and when it happens. He is also the One who raises kings up and He is the One who removes kings as well. From a human perspective at the time it was thought that most kings became kings because of heritage or military overthrow. But ultimately, God is the One who gives success to a person and causes him to become a king. Most of the time God used human agency.

Along with that, verse 21b says, "He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding!" From a human perspective, people who are wise and have a lot of knowledge become that way by reading books, studying, and listening to other people share their experiences. But ultimately, it is God who gives the final outcome of their hard work. He is the One who gives us the wisdom and knowledge.

That's why Daniel is so thankful to God. In verse 23 we read, "I thank You and praise You, O God of my fathers, Who has given me wisdom and might and has made known to me now what we desired of You, for You have made known to us the solution to the king's problem." So Daniel was a humble man that recognized that his successes came from God. Even when Daniel went before the king and interpreted the dream, he didn't take the credit for himself. He was still very humble. In verse 28a it says, "But there is a God in heaven Who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what it is that shall be in the latter days (at the end of days)." So even before the king, Daniel acknowledges God as the source of that revelation of the dream.

As you continue reading on in this story, you will see that after Daniel interpreted the dream, he was promoted to a higher position. That gift of God and Daniel's humbleness made Daniel a more influential figure. We can learn a very significant character trait in this story. I think we can all learn to be a little more humble just as Daniel was humble. Yes, Daniel had to work hard, pray, and seek God. But once the revelation came to him, he lifted up the name of the Lord. He didn't boast about how hard he worked or how hard he prayed in order to receive it. He just gave God all the glory. We should be the same way. We should all have a humble spirit and acknowledge that all our successes are a result of God's mercy and grace upon us. Wisdom and might are His forever!
