WORSHIP THE LORD!

Date: August 16

Category: Satisfied in God

Psalm 57:7-9
"My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is steadfast and confident! I will sing and make melody. Awake, my glory (my inner self); awake, harp and lyre! I will awake right early [I will awaken the dawn]! I will praise and give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn the psalms, you can find different fluctuations of feelings. You can read about every human emotion in the psalms, whether it is faith, courage, fear, sorrow, worry, or happiness. All kinds of human emotions are expressed in the psalms. I once heard that if you read and meditate upon the psalms then when you become old, your mind would still be fresh. Many elderly people begin to develop mental illnesses with old age. But I've heard that one of the best forms of medicine for mental illness is reading and meditating upon the psalms. The psalms are the best way to heal the human mind.

David, who was very godly and had a very unique and special relationship with God, wrote the psalm that we are reading today. Ever since he was young, even when he was the shepherd for his father's sheep, David always did everything with his best effort. Because of that, God made him great. So it really doesn't matter what you do in life as long as you do it well. If you are the shepherd of someone else's sheep and you do your job well, then God will give you your own flock.

Let's examine what David says in this passage. Verse 7 says, "My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is steadfast and confident!" When your heart, which represents you as a person, is fixed, it means that you are well focused. So everything David spoke of, thought of, and did were all focused on God. Not only was David focused but also he was steadfast and confident. So regardless of what obstacles David faced, he still focused on reaching success. David never gave up.

During the Second World War, Winston Churchill was supposed to give a speech during the time London was heavily bombed. The people were waiting for his arrival but he was delayed. When he finally arrived, he looked the people straight in the eyes and said, "Never give up! Never give up! Never give up!" That was his speech. Some people said that that was the best speech Winston Churchill ever gave.

We can read in the Scriptures that throughout David's life he never gave up. Even in this psalm, we can see that he was fixed on a purpose and was steadfast and confident. One of David's purposes is found in the second part of verse 7 where it says, "I will sing and make melody." So David wanted to create music for the Lord. Because he was focused, that was what he did. As a result of his steadfast confidence, he later became known as the father of worship in Israel.

Then in verse 8 we read, "Awake, my glory (my inner self); awake, harp and lyre! I will awake right early [I will awaken the dawn]!" So we can see here that David made God a priority. That's how focused he was. Worshiping God was the first thing David did in the morning. He would wake up and sing praises unto the Lord. We should do the same in our lives as well. Every morning we should wake up and lift up songs of praise to our God.

Then we read in verse 9, "I will praise and give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations." This was something that David consciously decided to do. David was bold enough to praise the Lord regardless of what was around him and regardless of who was around him. David felt that God was so important that he devoted his talents and abilities to the glory of God. We too should devote our talents and abilities to God. Not only will that bring honor to God but also it will bring success to us.

We, as human beings, have been created to worship God. That should be our first and foremost priority in life. When we do that, we experience a sense of fullness in our hearts. We feel a sense of completeness, joy and purpose in life. Nothing else can give us that fulfillment in life except God, through us worshiping and honoring Him. Saint Augustine, a philosopher from the 5th century said that God has created us with a vacuum within our hearts that only He can fill to satisfaction. So nothing else can fill that void in our hearts except God.

That's why it's so important to make God our first priority in life, and it's important to remember to do that early in the morning. We should always wake up praising and worshiping the Lord. That's why he created us. That's what He desires from us. So today let's remember God and make Him our priority, and let's worship His great name!
