Proverbs 24:30-34
"I went by the field of the lazy man, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; and, behold, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles were covering its face, and its stone wall was broken down. Then I beheld and considered it well; I looked and received instruction. Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep – so shall your poverty come as a robber, and your want as an armed man."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn the Bible, we can see that laziness is never connected to anything positive. Laziness is never connected to blessing, prosperity, or any of the good things of God. It's always connected with something negative. So in this passage, we can learn that being lazy is not a good thing. But how do you recognize someone who is lazy? Well it says here in verse 30a, "I went by the field of the lazy man…" So in order to recognize if someone is lazy we just have to go by their field, their homes, or their properties. And verse 31a describes what the field of a lazy person looks like. "And, behold, it was all grown over with thorns, and the nettles were covering its face…" That's a description of a lazy person's field. We can see hear that lazy people don't take care of their property. When a person buys a house, he has to take care of that house. He has to cut the grass, shovel the snow, and clean the house. But if he doesn't do that, then we can clearly see that he is a lazy person.

How else can you recognize a lazy person? Well the second part of verse 30 says, "..and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding." The vineyard represents a person's source of income. So along with going by their house, we can also go by their workplace to see if they are lazy. It says in verse 31b, "and its stone wall was broken down." So in other words, a lazy person doesn't care about his workplace, his source of income. If you find people who are just fooling around at work, wasting the time and resources of their employer, then you can clearly see that they are lazy people. Employers do not want to hire lazy people. Actually lazy people are the first to get fired. So there's no benefit in being lazy.

Now we can see that a lazy person does not take care of his property and he doesn't take care of his employment. So what does he do instead? Well we read in verse 33, "Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep." So instead of working, a lazy person just sleeps! But that sleeping will only lead to poverty. Verse 34 says, "So shall your poverty come as a robber, and your want as an armed man."

Regardless of what temperament we are, each one of us has a tendency towards laziness. We would all rather sit back and do nothing, but we can't do that. If we do, then our poverty will come like a robber. You never expect when a robber is about to come. But they come and they destroy your belongings. They take away things you don't want them to take away. They steal from you and they do it unexpectedly. So in the same way a thief breaks into someone's house and robs him unexpectedly, so will our poverty come if all we do is sleep and slumber. Laziness will only steal away from your future. Then it says that your want will come as an armed man. A person in want is a person in lack. And an armed man is one who takes control. So lack will come to you so strongly that it will control your life. You'll desire things but you won't be able to have them. That's what laziness will do to you.

So it's obvious here that laziness profits us nothing. It's very easy to recognize someone lazy. But today, I'd like to challenge you to examine yourself. Compare yourself with verse 31. Are your fields overgrown with thorns and nettles? Is your stonewall broken down? Do you take care of your property and your employment? Do you work hard every day to improve yourself and your environment? If you do work hard, then the same is true for the opposite of laziness. Hard work and diligence will profit you blessings. So today, let's get out of our lazy ways and let's work hard to bring prosperity into our lives!
