CONFIDENCE IN THE WORD

Date: July 14

Category: Trust in God

Psalm 119:130, 162, 167, 173
"The entrance and unfolding of Your words give light; their unfolding gives understanding (discernment and comprehension) to the simple… I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great spoil… Your testimonies have I kept [hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying them]; I love them exceedingly!…Let Your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen Your precepts."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiHave you ever been at a crossroad in your life? Have you ever wondered what you should do or what decision you should make? Well it says in verse 130a, "The entrance and unfolding of Your words give light…" In other words, God's Word will give you direction in life. God's Word will guide you to make the right decisions. But notice that it says both the entrance and the unfolding of His Word will bring light.

The entrance of God's Word is you making that decision to go and read the Bible and see what it says. That's the entrance of His Word. But then the unfolding of His Word is you examining how His Word applies to your life and how you can change your life to line yourself up to the Word of God. That's the unfolding of His Word. Both the entrance and the unfolding of God's Word are needed for light to come into your life. You need to do both in order to receive direction. Then it says in verse 130b, "their unfolding gives understanding (discernment and comprehension) to the simple." So when you unfold the Word of God by applying it into your life that is when you will gain understanding.

The Word of God is a great equalizer. It doesn't matter how simple you are or how educated or uneducated you are. You can still be successful in life if you read and obey the Word of God. When you read God's Word, you will have an equal chance to succeed in life as anybody else. It doesn't matter what level of education you have or the amount of training you have. You can still be successful in your work, your studies, your relationships, and in any area of your life if you have the Word of God in your heart.

Then we read in verse 162, "I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great spoil." Many people are glad when they receive material things or when they are financially successful. But this verse says that we will rejoice in God's Word just as someone rejoices when they find great spoil. Someone once said that if a pastor put a Bible at one end of the church and a thousand dollars at the other end, most people would probably run towards the thousand dollars first rather than running toward the Bible. That shows where their heart is. The Word of God should always be our greatest joy. Actually, the Word of God will bring all those material things to us anyway when we do what the Word says.

Then we read in verse 167, "Your testimonies have I kept [hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying them]; I love them exceedingly!" So we are to keep the Word of God and love the Word of God exceedingly, meaning we are to love God's Word without measure. So it's important to rejoice over the Word, keep the Word, and love the Word. If we don't have joy in our hearts, then we don't have the Word in our hearts. In order to put the Word in our hearts, we have to read it, hear it, receive it, love it, and obey it.

It says in John 6:63, "It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver]; the flesh conveys no benefit whatever [there is no profit in it]. The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life." That's what Jesus said to His disciples about the Word of God. His words are spirit and life. That's why we should put God's Word in our hearts continually and rejoice over His Word.

Then it says in verse 173 of this psalm, "Let Your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen Your precepts." This psalmist has chosen to do the commandments of God. It was a conscious decision that he made for himself. That's why he can confidently say, "Let Your hand be ready to help me…" God's hand is always ready to help us if we consciously chose to follow His precepts. When we obey God, we have every right to ask Him to help us. When an earthly father is pleased by his child's obedience, he is willing to help his child in any way he can. How much more would our Heavenly Father delight in helping us in our times of need when we obey Him? God wants to help us all the time, but He can only extend that hand of help when we obey His Word.

Our obedience to God's Word is what makes us confident. When we are reading His Word and obeying His commandments, we can be confident that He will direct our steps, give us understanding, and fill our hearts with joy and peace. We can be sure that God will help us in our times of trouble because we have chosen to keep His precepts. When we pray, we can be confident that we will receive what we have prayed for. All this confidence comes from obeying God's Word. So today, let's make that conscious decision to obey the Word of God.
