Genesis 5:24
"And Enoch walked [in habitual fellowship] with God; and he was not, for God took him [home with Him]."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIt says here that Enoch walked in ‘habitual fellowship' with God. A German translation called Hoffnung fuer Alle, (which means, ‘hope for all') says in this verse that Enoch lived in close relationship with God. When you look at the Hebrew term of ‘he walked' or ‘he lived in close relationship,' the word used here is ‘hithalak.' It's a reflexive form of the verb ‘halak,' which means ‘to walk.' So ‘hithalak' means ‘to cause oneself to walk.' It's a reflexive term. So Enoch caused himself to walk with God. Enoch didn't wait for God to move him. It was he, himself, who caused himself to walk with God.

People want to become spiritual giants; they want to become strong and mighty. But a lot of them aren't doing anything for it. Let's look at exercising for example. When you don't exercise your muscles, they become weak. But when you do exercise your muscles, they become strong. It's the same thing with our spiritual muscles. If we want to become strong and mighty in spirit, then we have to cause ourselves to walk with God. We can't wait to be pushed by someone else. We have to push ourselves. We should do anything it takes to grow spiritually.

You work to take care of your body, don't you? You feed your body; you clothe your body; you rest your body. You do so many things for your body. But the real you is not your body. The real you is what's inside your body. That's your spirit, your emotions, your thoughts, your feelings, and your will. And your spirit becomes hungry as well. We feel physical hunger because we feel something in our stomachs calling us to the fridge. But spiritual hunger doesn't call us to the fridge. It calls us to the Bible. We have to set aside time on a daily basis to read the Word of God. When you read the Word, ask for assistance. Ask for the Holy Spirit to speak to you and help you understand the Word of God. Ask Him to open your mind and help you see the greatness of God. Then you have to determine to obey what you've just read. God doesn't gain anything if we're obedient. You and I gain. You and I are going to succeed in whatever we do when God is the primary focus in our lives.

So when you take your Bible, say to yourself, ‘God, speak to my heart. Open my mind; open my spirit for Your truth. I want to understand You. I want to know Your will. I want more of You in my life.' It's your choice whether or not you're going to read the Word. It's your choice whether or not you're going to obey it after you've read it. You'll benefit if you do, but you have to be willing.

So Enoch is an early example of someone who caused himself to walk with God. You must also remember that at that time, most of the people did not live the way they were supposed to live. They were doing wrongful things. They didn't seek God. They didn't pray to Him. They didn't care what God said. Enoch lived in that kind of culture, a culture that didn't care about God. Yet, he still caused himself to seek God.

When you go to public school or a place of work, you will find that many people will not want to follow God. But it's your choice to cause yourself to walk the narrow way. Do you want to be like Enoch? Or do you want to be like everybody else? There is no middle ground with God. You're either with Him or you're against Him. It's better to be with Him, so cause yourself to walk with God the way Enoch did.
