Psalm 103:3
"Who forgives [every one of] all your iniquities, Who heals [each one of] all your diseases."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis verse is a beautiful statement of truth. It reveales who God is and what God does for us as believers. It says here that He forgives every one of all your iniquities. Iniquity means sin; committing iniquities really means doing something that is contrary to the Word of God's clear commandments. But here it says that God forgives all of our iniquities. Isn't that wonderful?

During Easter time, we are reminded of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us so that we can receive forgiveness for our sins. When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the penalty for our sins. His blood that was shed now washes our sins away. The power of sin and death has been broken through Jesus. Now receiving that forgiveness from God is the first step to knowing who God really is. We know that God is a gracious, merciful and forgiving God. But there is no access to God other than through Christ. John 14:6 says, "Jesus said to him, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me."

So when we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us (1 John 1:9). In 2 Corinthians 5:17 it says, "Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!" Once we are forgiven and our sins have been washed away, we then have a clean and fresh start with God.

The second part of Psalm 103:3 says "…Who heals [each one of] all your diseases." So not only does God forgive you of your sins, but He also heals you of all your diseases. Do you believe that God has forgiven you of your sins? It's not hard to believe that because God said in His Word that He would forgive us. So knowing that He has said that, we can now receive that forgiveness by faith. Well the faith that it takes to believe that your sins are forgiven is the same measure of faith that it takes to believe that you will be healed.

Isaiah 53:5 says, "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole." We can read a similar context in 1 Peter 2:24 where it says, "He personally bore our sins in His [own] body on the tree [as on an altar and offered Himself on it], that we might die (cease to exist) to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed."

Just as Christ paid the penalty for our sins, He has also paid the price for us to receive healing as well. The same way we believe to be saved is the same way we need to believe to be healed. Romans 10:9 says that if we confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts that Jesus is Lord then we will be saved. Since we need to confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts for salvation, then we have to do the same for our healing as well.

But remember healing is followed by forgiveness first. For example, James 5:16a says, "Confess to one another therefore your faults (your slips, your false steps, your offenses, your sins) and pray [also] for one another, that you may be healed and restored [to a spiritual tone of mind and heart]…" So you must first confess your sins before you can receive healing. That's when healing will happen. Healing comes after the forgiveness of sins.

It's also interesting to note that many sicknesses come from sin. For example, if we have bitterness and resentment in our hearts, then that could lead to health problems as well. Eighty percent of sicknesses are caused by hatred, bitterness or resentment in our hearts. There are other sicknesses that are caused by sin as well. For example, sexually transmitted diseases are often caused by adultery and fornication. Those sicknesses are a result of some kind of sinful act. That's why healing can only come after the forgiveness of sins.

I heard of a mother who had a little girl that suffered with seizures. She was a lady of great means, so she had the money to get all the best medical help she could in North America. But even though she got the best medical assistance, her daughter's seizures only diminished a little bit with the medication. So she went to her pastor and asked him to pray for her daughter to be healed.

But the well known pastor said, "Do you walk in love? Is there anyone in your heart that you don't love?" The lady thought for a moment and said, "Yeah, my mother-in-law. I don't like her very much." Then the pastor said, "I'm not going to pray for your daughter." He told her that she needed to restore the relationship with her mother-in-law first and walk in complete love first. So this lady listened to him and went to her mother-in-law and restored that relationship.

Then she called her pastor to ask him to pray for her daughter now that the relationship has been restored. But the pastor said, "I'm not going to pray for her." She asked him why not and he said, "I don't need to pray for her now. Because you're walking in love, your daughter is already being healed." Sure enough, that's exactly what happened.

So we can see here that healing comes after the forgiveness of sins. If you are sick in your body today and need a healing touch from the Lord. Before praying for your healing, pray for forgiveness first for anything that you may have done that is contrary to God's Word. Once God forgives you of your iniquities, then He will heal you of your diseases, just as Psalm 103:3 says because forgiveness always precedes healing.
