LOOK WELL AFTER YOUR CITY

Date: April 21

Category: Hard Work and Diligence

Jeremiah 29:5-7
"Build yourselves houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat the fruit of them. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not be diminished. And seek (inquire for, require, and request) the peace and welfare of the city to which I have caused you to be carried away captive; and pray to the Lord for it, for in the welfare of [the city in which you live] you will have welfare."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThere are so many things we can learn from these Scriptures. It says in verse 5a, "Build yourselves houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat the fruit of them." In another Scripture, it says, "If anyone will not work, neither let him eat" [2 Thessalonians 3:10]. So you have to plant your gardens. Your production, your labor, or the fruit of your work is what you will eat from. Many people are just waiting for opportunities to arise, but opportunities don't happen by themselves. People who work hard and improve themselves are the people who receive opportunities.

Then it says in verse 6, "Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not be diminished." In other words, God wants you to multiply and expand your family. Following that, it says in verse 7, "And seek (inquire for, require, and request) the peace and welfare of the city to which I have caused you to be…" So God wants us to live and prosper in the city that He has sent us to. So make sure that all is well within your city. Do what you can to improve your city. Not only are we to ensure that all is well for our city, but we are to pray for our city. It says at the end of verse 7, "for in the welfare of [the city in which you live] you will have welfare." So when everything is well in your city, then everything will be well with you.

For example, let's assume that there's a high unemployment rate in your city. That means that most of the people don't have jobs and therefore, the possibility of you finding a job will be unlikely. When the city's economy isn't well, then your economy won't be well either. But let's say that there are good high paying jobs in your city. That means you are likely to find a good high paying job yourself. So if the city's economy is well, then you will be well too.

That's why God tells us to look well after our city, so we will be well too. How can we look well after our city? Well, we pay taxes for our city. We respect properties, whether they are private or public. We look well after ourselves to avoid being a burden to the city, for instance, working instead of living on welfare. We give back into our city by supporting charities and organizations. We do things that will benefit our city. When we take measures to ensure that things are well within our city, then God will ensure that things are well with us.

The same principle applies in marriage. When a wife looks well after the needs of her husband, he will be happy. When he's happy, then the wife will be happy also. When a husband looks well after the needs of his wife, then she will be happy. When she's happy, the whole household is happy! When your family is doing well, then things will also be well with you.

So make sure that your city is doing well. Do what you can to improve your city. Make a contribution to your city because that is the city in which God has sent you. When your city is well, then you too will be well.
