UNGODLY ALLIANCES

Date: April 12

Category: Godly Character

2 Chronicles 19:2, 20:37b
"Jehu son of Hanani, the seer, went out to meet him and said to Jehoshaphat, Should you help the ungodly and love those who hate the Lord? Because of this, wrath has gone out against you from the Lord." "Because you have joined Ahaziah, the Lord will destroy your works. So the ships were wrecked and unable to go to Tarshish."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a story about Jehoshaphat, who was the king of Judah. He was a very godly king. Many good things have been written about Jehoshaphat because he never fell away from the Lord or worshipped idols. But Jehoshaphat did do some things that didn't please God, and because of that, he was punished. Jehoshaphat engaged in some ungodly alliances. This happened on two occasions, and both times were with the northern king, and both times he was punished for it.

The first time he made alliance with the ungodly was with Ahab, who was very wicked and had a wife who was just as wicked. He allied himself with Ahab in war and because of that he could have been killed. After the battle, when he came back to Judah, Jehu, the prophet said to him, "Should you help the ungodly and love those who hate the Lord?" Really what Jehu was saying to Jehoshaphat was that he should not have joined with the ungodly. He should not have partnered with Ahab.

But Jehoshaphat didn't learn his lesson the first time. He joined with another ungodly king shortly after. In chapter 20, verse 35, we read that he partnered with Ahaziah, who was very wicked. But this time, it wasn't a war partnership; it was a business venture. Verse 36 says, "He joined him in building ships to go to Tarshish, building them in Ezion-geber." Because of that partnership, God punished him again. We read in verse 37b, "Because you have joined Ahaziah, the Lord will destroy your works. So the ships were wrecked and unable to go to Tarshish."

The same goes with us today. We are godly people and should not have partnerships with the ungodly. We should help the ungodly by providing their physical needs and we should also lead them to Christ. We shouldn't go into partnership with them.

If you start a business with somebody who is a non-Christian, eventually that business will fail. There will be disagreements and arguments. You will have one way of dealing with business, but they will have another. If your partner doesn't pull their weight in the business, then you will bear the consequences as well. It's very hard to untangle yourself once you are in a business partnership with someone and even worse when that person is ungodly.

For example, if a Christian marries a non-Christian, then that marriage is doomed to fail as well. You might have feelings for someone who's not a Christian, but it doesn't mean you should marry them. A marriage like that is bound to fail. Chapter 19, verse 2b says, "Because of this, wrath has gone out against you from the Lord." It's like sowing and reaping. If you sow bad seeds, you'll reap a bad crop.

So we can learn from this example that wrong alliances will fail. You may not see it right away, but sooner or later you will see that it will fail. God has shown us examples of that and we can even see some examples throughout history. Ungodly alliances will not succeed. So do not engage in an ungodly alliance. Do not strike hands with non-believers. This includes business, marriage, relationships, and any other kind of partnership. The Word of God says that the work you will try to do with your ungodly alliance will not succeed.

Instead, you have to spend time in the presence of God, reading His Word and praying to Him. Ask the Lord to speak to your heart and tell you what He wants you to do. When you do what He wants you to do, then your works will prosper.
