Judges 6:22-23
"And when Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the Lord, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face! The Lord said to him, Peace be to you, do not fear; you shall not die."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThroughout the book of Judges, we read that the Israelites constantly did evil in the sight of the Lord. They did as they pleased without considering what God wanted. Because they did what was evil in the sight of God, God would give them into the hands of their enemies. Then they would cry out to God to save them. So God would raise up a judge and that judge would rescue them. That's why God raised up judges during this time. In this case, the judge God raised was Gideon.

In verse 14 we read, "The Lord turned to him and said, Go in this your might, and you shall save Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?" So the Lord called Gideon to be the judge who would rescue Israel at this time. But Gideon wasn't very sure of himself. In verse 15 we read, "Gideon said to Him, Oh Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Behold, my clan is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house." Because Gideon's tribe was the smallest and poorest among the land and because he was the youngest of his family, he wasn't very confident about rescuing Israel.

But the Lord reassures him in verse 16. "The Lord said to him, Surely I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man." Then we read that Gideon asked God to show him a sign that He was really going to help him (verse 17). As he brought sacrifices to the Lord, he saw the Angel of the Lord.

In the Bible, the Angel of the Lord is different than any other angel. The Angel of the Lord represented the Lord Jesus Christ. So here, Jesus Christ appeared before Gideon. We read in verse 21, "Then the Angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in His hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes, and there flared up fire from a rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. Then the Angel of the Lord vanished from his sight." When Gideon saw this happen, he thought he was going to die because he saw the Angel of the Lord face to face.

But then we read in verse 23, "The Lord said to him, Peace be to you, do not fear; you shall not die." So God is telling Gideon not to be afraid, but to walk by faith. God is telling us the same thing today. Don't be afraid of anything in your life, whether it is your life situation, your work situation, problems in your family or relationships, or anything at all. God says, don't be afraid.

God doesn't want you to face those situations with fear. If you want to have peace in your heart, then you have to operate by faith. Your life should not be based on fear; it should be based on faith. When it comes to your future, do not be afraid. Have faith in God. Trust that He will take care of you. If you have problems in your relationship, don't approach it with fear. Approach it with faith and God will see you through.

The important thing to remember is speaking positively. Speak faith into your situation. That's how you operate in faith – by speaking it! Faith will enable you to overcome any situation in your life. God wants you and I to speak words of faith. Faith becomes real to us when we speak it, more so than when we don't say anything at all. In order to see our situations change, words of faith have to come from our hearts and out of our mouths. Jesus says, "For out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks." (Matthew 12:34). That's what God wants us to do. God wants us to operate by faith. He wants us to trust Him and fear not because He will see us through our dark situations.
