ENJOY THE BLESSINGS OF GOD

Date: December 4

Category: The Goodness of God

Deuteronomy 16:15b
"The Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the works of your hands, so that you will be altogether joyful."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a promise of blessing. But to whom does God promise the blessing? Well it says here that He will bless those who are producing and those who are working. If you don't produce and if you don't work, then you cannot expect to receive the blessing of God. It says here, "The Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the works of your hands." In other words, God promises to bless people who are diligent. He never blesses anyone who is lazy. Nobody has ever become successful in life because of laziness. Successful people are those who work hard and do more than what is expected of them. Those are the people who can expect to receive the blessing of God.

In Ecclesiastes 9:10 we read, "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol (the place of the dead) where you are going." In other words, when there is a task ahead of you, you are to complete that task with all of your effort, meaning you are to tackle that assignment until you finish it successfully. That's the only way you will be successful in life.

When you and I do our part by working hard and well focused at whatever we are doing, then we are giving God an opportunity to bless us. When we don't work, then we don't give Him an opportunity to bless us. God always requires something from us before He can bless us. Even when God performs miracles, He still requires that we do our part. For example, when the children of Israel had to cross the Red Sea, Moses had to stretch out his staff before the water could part. So before God can move in our lives, He needs us to do our part first. In this case, before God can bless us, He needs us to work and produce.

But why does God want to bless us? Well the last part of this verse says, "so that you will be altogether joyful." God's blessings are given to us so that we will be joyful. God doesn't just want us to work and not enjoy life. God wants us to have fun as well. Some people misinterpret this teaching and think that God doesn't want us to work but only to have fun. Others misinterpret this teaching and think that God only wants us to work and not to have any fun. But God wants us to experience both. He wants us to work hard in order to receive the blessing of God. Then once we receive the blessing of God, He wants us to enjoy it. There is a healthy balance between work and fun.

In Ecclesiastes 5:18-19 we read, "Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is for one to eat and drink, and to find enjoyment in all the labor in which he labors under the sun all the days which God gives him – for this is his [allotted] part. Also, every man to whom God has given riches and possessions, and the power to enjoy them and to accept his appointed lot and to rejoice in his toil – this is the gift of God [to him]." In other words, we need to work in order to produce some kind of income to support our families and ourselves. But our work should not be our identity. That's why God wants us to enjoy the fruits of our labour, meaning He wants us to have fun in life as well.

In Ecclesiastes 9:7-9 we read, "Go your way, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a cheerful heart [if you are righteous, wise, and in the hands of God], for God has already accepted your works. Let your garments be always white [with purity], and let your head not lack [the] oil [of gladness]. Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun – all the days of futility. For that is your portion in this life and in your work at which you toil under the sun." It's so sad to see people who have not learned to enjoy life.

We can clearly see from the Scriptures that God wants us to work because it's the only way He can bless us. But God also wants us to enjoy our lives. That's why He blesses us. The blessing of God has been given to us so that we will enjoy it. So today, let us acknowledge all the wonderful blessings of God in our lives and let us take some time to enjoy His blessings.
