Matthew 8:16
"When evening came, they brought to Him many who were under the power of demons, and He drove out the spirits with a word and restored to health all who were sick."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThere is so much said in such few words here. This passage reveals to us such great truths about the power of God. We read here that many people, who were under the power of demons, were brought to Jesus. Now what exactly are demons? Are demons those ghostly figurines that we see at Halloween and in horror movies? No, demons disguise themselves as angels of light.

According to John 6:63, the Word of God is spirit and life. So if we can relate the spirit of God to the words of Jesus, then we can understand that evil spirits are connected to words as well, except they are connected to the words of Satan. In other words, if the words of God are spirit and life, then the words of Satan are spirit and death. With that understanding, we can conclude that evil spirits are in relation to satanic words. But what words are from Satan? Well anything that is contrary to the Word of God is from Satan. The moment you accept Satan's words and believe them as truth, then you become oppressed with evil spirits, and you will receive exactly what those words entail.

Let's say, for example, you start believing that you are going to be poor for the rest of your life. Well we can see in Deuteronomy 28:1-14 that that's not true. But if you believe those satanic words, then you will be poor for the rest of your life. Let's say you become sick and start believing that you will never get better. According to Isaiah 53:5 we know that we are healed by the stripes of Jesus. But if you believe that you're always going to be sick then you'll always be sick. If you choose to believe the words of Satan, then you are going to receive what Satan speaks to you. On the other hand, if you choose to believe the Word of God, then the Word of God will be true in your life.

So the people who came to Jesus were under the power of Satan's words, meaning they believed things that were contrary to the Word of God. As a result, they were possessed by those demons. In other words, they had strongholds in their minds, which were created because the devil had taken residence and control. So when the people came to Jesus, Jesus drove out those demonic spirits with a word. He didn't physically whip the spirits out of the people. He didn't beg God to free the people from the spirits. Jesus had all the authority and power to drive out those evil spirits by His very word.

You and I have that same authority and power through the name of Jesus Christ when we speak the Word of God. Just as Jesus had to speak in order to drive those demons out, you and I have to speak the Word as well. The only way to defeat the devil is through the Word of God. That's why it's so important to have the Word in our hearts.

In the last part of verse 16 we read that Jesus "restored to health all who were sick." Demonic possession causes sickness. So when Jesus relieved the people from those demons, He also restored their health by that same word that He spoke. We read something very similar in Psalm 107:20a, "He sends forth His word and heals them." God heals us through His Word. When we believe what God says about our lives, then everything He says about us is going to happen.

An important thing to remember is that physical healing comes as a result of spiritual healing. In order for the people to be healed, they needed to be freed from those evil spirits first. The only way to free them was the word that Jesus spoke. So our spirits need to be free before we can receive any physical healing. In 3 John 1:2 we read, "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers." In other words, the prosperity and wellness of the body is dependant on the prosperity and wellness of the spirit and soul. That's why Jesus drove out the evil spirits first and then restored the people's health, and He did it with just one word.

So when you encounter any difficulties in your life (health-wise, financially, relationally, etc.) one word from God could change your entire life. You and I need more of the Word of God than anything else in our lives. That's why Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, "Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God."
