1 Samuel 2:26
"Now the boy Samuel grew and was in favour both with the Lord and with men."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiSamuel was the son of Elkanah and his wife, Hannah. Hannah was not able to conceive for quite awhile so she went to the temple and prayed for a child. She committed in her heart that if God gave her a child, she would give him to the service of the Lord. So when Samuel was born, she brought him to the temple and gave him to live and work in the temple. Now in this verse, we read a very interesting statement about Samuel. We see here that he grew and was in favour with God and people. We see in Luke 2:52 that Jesus grew the same way as well. "And Jesus increased in wisdom (in broad and full understanding) and in stature and years, and in favour with God and man."

But how did Samuel grow in favour with God? Well in 1 Samuel 2:35a God said, "And I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest (Priest), who shall do according to what is in My heart and mind." In other words, Samuel was a man who did what was in the heart and mind of God. He did exactly what God wanted him to do. Then in 1 Samuel 3:10b we read, "Then Samuel answered, Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening." So in order to do according to what was in God's heart and mind, Samuel had to listen to the voice of God and embrace everything that God spoke. That's how he grew in favour with God. He listened to what God said and then he did everything that God wanted him to do. Then in 1 Samuel 3:21b we read, "For the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh through the word of the Lord."

So Samuel grew in favour with God by listening to God's voice and doing exactly what was in God's heart and mind. But how did he grow in favour with people? Well he grew in favour with people because he was in favour with God. For example in 1 Samuel 3:20 we read, "And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord." Because Samuel had a proper relationship with God, all the other Israelites took notice of him. Not only that, but Samuel was in a proper relationship with people as well. In 1 Samuel 8:7a we read, "And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken to the voice of the people in all they say to you." So Samuel was a man who knew to listen to the voice of other people as well.

When we listen to other people, they gain a sense that we understand and care for them. When a husband listens to his wife, she feels that he cares for her. When parents listen to their children, the children sense that their parents understand them. God gave us two ears and only one mouth. I believe that God wants us to listen twice as much as we speak. That's how we grow in favour with people – by listening to them. That's exactly what Samuel did.

Now there are times that the words of people will contradict the Word of God. In those cases, we shouldn't listen to the words of people. For example in Acts 4:19 after the Jewish leaders put Peter and John in prison for preaching the Gospel we read, "But Peter and John replied to them, Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you and obey you rather than God, you must decide (judge)." So in situations where the voice of people are conflicting the voice of God, then we are not to listen to people. But in situations where people express their needs and requests, we are to listen to them if we want to grow in favour with them.

That's how Samuel grew in favour with both God and man. He listened and paid attention to both. But notice that Samuel grew in favour with God first, meaning he listened to God and did what He wanted first. Then he listened to people. His proper relationship with God taught him how to relate to people. So that's how we are to relate as well if we want to grow in favour with both God and man.
