Genesis 1:28a
"And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is the commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve, the first man and woman on the earth. First He blessed them and then He told them to "be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth." In other words, He told them to have children. That process of multiplying is truly a blessing from God. Later on, we read in Genesis 7 that there was a great flood that destroyed all humanity except Noah and his family. In Genesis 9 when Noah came out of the ark, we read in verse 1, "And God pronounced a blessing upon Noah and his sons and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth." So again, God blessed Noah and his sons and then told them to "be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth." This is very similar to what God said to Adam and Eve.

In Ezekiel 37:26 we read, "I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them, and I will give blessings to them and multiply them and will set My sanctuary in the midst of them forevermore." This prophecy was for the children of Israel who were in exile. God promised that He was going to make a covenant of peace with them. But not only that, He promised that He was going to bless them and multiply them. So we can clearly see that there is a connection between blessing and multiplying. It's so important to see children as a blessing from God.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, an average North American family had about 7-8 children. Later on in the 19th century and throughout the 20th century as more urban areas were created, more and more women saw the need to get an education and enter the workforce. So the number of children per family dropped dramatically. In today's society, the number of children being born is much lower. In Germany, the average woman has 1.3 children. In Italy, the rate is 1.2 children. In France, the rate is 1.91, and in Canada, the rate is 1.61. What's needed for humanity to replenish itself is a rate of 2.07 children per woman. But because of this decrease in children, it's predicted that by 2050, most of the population in the Western world will be over 60 years old, which will make it more difficult for people to retire since there'll be fewer people in the workforce.

Yet when you read through the Bible, you can see that God has clearly commanded us to multiply. Some people have the perception that a lot of children make a rich man poor. But that is such a wrong perception because actually having a lot of children makes a poor man rich. When you train your children in a proper way so that they will become successful in life, not only will your children be blessed, but you will be blessed as well.

It says in Psalm 127:3, "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward." So children are a reward from God. One of the main reasons why there is unhappiness in some marriage relationships is because the couple is selfish and doesn't want to be fruitful and reproduce. That's why God wants us to multiply. When God gives you children, He will also provide for them. He'll give you divine ability to do whatever it takes to provide for their needs. In Psalm 127:4 it says, "As arrows are in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth." Arrows are very useful tools that are put in the hands of a warrior. So children are in the hands of their parents in order that the parents might direct them to where they should go. Then it says in verse 5a, "Happy, blessed, and fortunate is the man whose quiver is filled with them!" So again, God says that children are a blessing.

People in our western society today are afraid that there won't be enough people working for them to retire in ten, twenty, or thirty years from now. But this wouldn't be a problem if they heed to this commandment from God and multiply. There is a reason why God wants us to multiply. All children are a reward from Him. So to all the married couples that are able to have children, heed to this commandment from God. Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth because children are a blessing from God.
