Deuteronomy 4:1-2
"Now listen and give heed, O Israel, to the statutes and ordinances which I teach you, and do them, that you may live and go in and possess the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, gives you. You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you diminish it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThese verses are very similar to Revelation 22:18-19 where Jesus warns us not add or cancel anything that has been recorded in the prophecy. If we add to the prophecy, then God will add to us the plagues and afflictions recorded therein and if we cancel or take anything away from the prophecy, then God will cancel us from the tree of life. So it is a very serious offence to add to or cancel from the Word of God.

Instead, our approach to the Word of God should be to listen and give heed to it (Deuteronomy 4:1a). This includes going to church and listening to preachers, but more importantly, we need to listen to the Word as we read it in our own personal devotional time. We are to have time allotted where we listen to God's Word and meditate upon His truth. When we eat, drink, and shower, we are committing that time to nurture our bodies. When we go to school, we are committing that time to train our minds. When we spend time with our families, we are committing that time to strengthen our souls. But when we read and listen to the Word of God, then we are committing that time to feed our spirits. According to this verse, God says that that's how we are to approach the Word of God.

The second approach that we are to take toward God's Word is to do them (Deuteronomy 4:1b). Now that we've listened and heeded to the Word, the next step is to do what God instructs us to do. In James 1:22 we read, "But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth]. For if anyone only listens to the Word without obeying it and being a doer of it, he is like a man who looks carefully at his [own] natural face in a mirror; for he thoughtfully observes himself, and then goes off and promptly forgets what he was like." So God wants us to not only listen to His Word, but also to do what His Word says. That's what it means to be more than just hearers of the Word.

When we listen and obey the Word of God, there are certain benefits that become part of our lives. Deuteronomy 4:1c says, "that you may live..." So the Word of God is for our lives. In John 6:63b Jesus said, "The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life." We are spirit beings first. So in the same way we need to feed our bodies, we have to feed our spirits as well in order to have life. In Matthew 4:4 we read, "But He replied, It has been written, Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God." So we need the Word of God in order to live.

Then Deuteronomy 4:1d says, "and go in and possess the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, gives you." So another benefit of listening and doing the Word of God is the enablement that God gives us to possess the things that He has promised us. In order to have that divine enablement, we need to be in a proper relationship with His Word, which means we have to listen to His Word and practice it in our lives. In Deuteronomy 7:12 we read, "And if you hearken to these precepts and keep and do them, the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the steadfast love which He swore to your fathers."

So listening to and practicing the Word of God are the two prerequisites that enable us to live and to possess the promises of God. As a result of our proper relationship with God in obedience to His Word, we will be able to achieve whatever God has promised us. So if you want to obtain the blessings of God, then this is the road to doing so. The road to obtaining the blessings of God is the road of obedience to God's Word.
