Numbers 14:27b-29a
"I have heard the complaints the Israelites murmur against Me. Tell them, As I live, says the Lord, what you have said in My hearing I will do to you: Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a sad story about the murmuring Israelites. While they were in the desert, they complained against God and against Moses. They said they should have just stayed in Egypt because they were going to die in the wilderness. So in this passage, God says that He has heard their complaints and was going to bring about everything they have said. In other words, God was going to create the reality of all their complaining.

We read in verse 43b, "Because you have turned away from following after the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you." So because they rebelled against God, God was going to take His protection away from them. As a result of losing the protection of God, we read in verse 35b, "In this wilderness they shall be consumed [by war, disease, plagues], and here they shall die." So without God's protection, they were going to die just as they murmured. That's why we read in verse 29a, "Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness." This all came as a result of the negative words spoken by the Israelites.

We can learn from this story that there is tremendous power in the words we speak. For example in Numbers 16:30 we read about Moses who spoke against the rebellion of Dathan and Abiram. Moses said,"But if the Lord causes a new thing [to happen], and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up, with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol (the place of the dead), then you shall understand that these men have provoked (spurned, despised) the Lord!" Then in verse 31-32a we read, "As soon as he stopped speaking, the ground under the offenders split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households."

So regardless of whether we speak negative things or positive things, every word we speak has a great influence on our circumstances. In Isaiah 57:19b it says, "I create the fruit of his lips." In other words, God says that He is the guarantor of everything we say. He is the One who ensures that everything we say will come to pass in our lives. That's why it is so important that you and I open our mouths with purpose and make sure we speak of the good things God has for us.

In Mark 11:23 Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, whoever says to this mountain, Be lifted up and thrown into the sea! And does not doubt at all in his heart but believes that what he says will take place, it will be done for him." Notice that if we believe in our hearts the very words we say then what we have spoken will be done for us. It says in Proverbs 18:21, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]." Your tongue has great power over your life. You can bring about life or death by just the words you say. That's why we should be speaking words of life.

The words that come out from your mouth are so crucial in determining your outcome. But the words that come out from your mouth are really dependant on the thoughts that go through your mind. And the thoughts that go through your mind are really dependant on the words you let go into your ears. That's why you should always allow the Word of God to be the primary voice coming into your ears. The Word of God that you hear will have an impact on your thoughts. The thoughts of God that you think will have an impact on the words you speak. In turn, the words you speak (which are now aligned with God's Word) are going to bring about positive results in your life.

But what does the Word of God say about your life? Well in Jeremiah 29:11-13, we read, "For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. Then you will call upon Me, and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear and heed you. Then you will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me [as a vital necessity] and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart." That's what the Word of God says about you.

It's so important to realize that God is the guarantor of your words. Because we know that God guarantees our words, now we have to make sure our words are reflective to His Word. Our tongue has the power to create life with abundance and success in every area, but our tongue also has the power to create our destruction, judgement and death as well. So let us be people who will speak positively about others and ourselves, and let us be people who will proclaim God's Word everywhere we go.
