3 John 2
"Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis passage is found in a letter that the Apostle John wrote to an elderly elder of the church named Gaius. We can see that John had a very loving relationship with Gaius because he addressed him as "Beloved." Then he writes, "I pray that you may prosper in every way." In other words, John wanted Gaius to prosper in every area of his life. Prosperity included health as it says in this verse, "[that your body] may keep well." But prosperity also includes relationships, whether in marriage or with children, and it also includes financial success.

For example, when you read Deuteronomy 28, you will notice in verses 1-14 that prosperity includes material blessing. Then in verses 15-58, you will see that poverty is a curse. So Apostle John wanted Gaius to prosper in his health, in his relationships, but also in his finances as well. Along with that, there are many different aspects to prosperity and we can see in the first part of verse 2 that John wanted Gaius to prosper in every area.

Then in the second part of verse 2, John writes, "As [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers." So the basis of that prosperity is really in the wellbeing and prosperity of his soul. In other words, Gaius' body will be healthy as his soul is healthy. His relationships will be blessed as his soul is blessed, and his finances will be prosperous as his soul is prosperous. That's why it's so important that we prosper our soul.

But what exactly is our soul? We as humans are a speaking spirit being and we all have a body in which we live. But if we are a speaking spirit that lives in a body, then what is our soul? Well in Genesis 2:7 we read, "Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living being." The term "living being" comes from the Hebrew word "nephesh," which is properly translated as "soul." Our soul consists of our mind, will and emotions – the mind being the seat of our soul.

So now that we know what our soul is, how do we prosper it? Well in Romans 12:2b we read, "Be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude]." In other words, God wants us to transform our mind through the Word of God so that the Word will reside within our mind. Once we do that, then we have to choose with our will to walk according to the Word. Then once we use our will to make that decision, our emotions become the propelling force that moves us to that action. As we act upon the Word of God then we will live in harmony with the will of God. When we are in harmony with God's will, then we will receive all the blessings of God. That's why it's so important for us to prosper our soul by lining up our mind with the Word of God.

In 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 we read, "For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds. [Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)." So God's Word, which is our weapon, has been given to us so that we will defeat every stronghold that tries to exalt itself against the knowledge of God and bring every thought under the lordship of Jesus Christ. That's what the Word of God is for.

So that's how we are to prosper our soul. As our soul prospers, so will every other area of our lives, including our physical health, our relationships, and our finances. But we have to focus on prospering our soul first. Our soul prosperity will determine any other prosperity that we will receive, just as the Apostle John wrote to Gaius, "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers." So today, let us prosper our soul by renewing our mind and bringing every thought under the authority of Christ. When we do that, then we will prosper in every way.
