Numbers 13:30c, 31a
"We are well able to conquer it. But his fellow scouts said, We are not ableā€¦"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a very crucial time in the history of the Israelites. At this time, the Israelites were still in the desert. Soon after they left Egypt, we read in verse 2 that Moses sent some men to scout out the land of Canaan and to come back with a report concerning the land. When they came back, they gave an excellent report about the land. All twelve of them agreed that the land was full of milk and honey and flourishing fruit. Ten of them reported about the strength of the people and determined that the Israelites were not strong enough to conquer the land. But there were two scouts, Caleb and Joshua, who reported that they were well able to conquer the land. It's interesting to notice that all twelve scouts went to see the land together. All twelve scouts agreed that the land was very fruitful. So the study and analysis of the land was the same. But their conclusions concerning what actions should be taken were different.

The ten fearful people said in verse 33b, "we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight." That was their conclusion. But we read in Numbers 14:8-9 the words spoken by Caleb and Joshua. "If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land flowing with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against the Lord, neither fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their defence and the shadow [of protection] is removed from over them, but the Lord is with us. Fear them not." That was the conclusion of the two scouts operating on faith.

The ten men who didn't think they could conquer the land looked at the challenge ahead of them with fear. They saw that the opposition was too great for them to defeat. Because they focussed on the enemy, they were frightened and concluded that the best thing to do was to back off. On the other hand, Caleb and Joshua had a different view. They didn't focus on the enemy; they focussed on God. They knew that God was going to give them the land. So they encouraged the Israelites not to fear the Canaanites because God was with them. It's amazing how focusing on God changes your whole attitude about a situation.

We read the same principle in the story of David when the Israelites had to fight the Philistines. In 1 Samuel 17:11 we read, "When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid." Fear comes as a result of focusing on the enemy. Because of their fear, they completely lost sight of God's presence in their situation. But then in 1 Samuel 17:37a we read, "David said, the Lord Who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine." So David acknowledged that there was an enemy, but he didn't focus on the enemy. He focused on God's ability to deliver him from the hands of the enemy. He knew God was with him. Because of that faith, he was able to defeat Goliath.

Today, you might be faced with an enemy like David or you might be faced with a challenge like Moses and the Israelites, and you may not feel that you are able to handle that situation. But I want to encourage you that God is on your side. He has already equipped you with everything you need to become successful. But as long as you compare yourself to your situation, that situation is going to look bigger and bigger. That's why you have to focus on God and His divine ability. The moment you shift your focus toward God, you will become victorious. What you focus on will determine how successful you will be. So today, let's focus on God and know that you are able to overcome every situation in your life.
