Leviticus 11:44a, 45b
"For I am the Lord your God; so consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am holy… therefore you shall be holy, for I am holy."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a commandment that God gives us for holiness. He gives us this command because He Himself is holy. So if we are His children, then we are to be holy, just as He is holy. In Leviticus 18, we read about different sexual immoralities that are unholy in God's sight. Then in Leviticus 19 we read about ways of relating to people that are holy in God's sight. But in Leviticus 11, we read about another way for holy living, and that involves our diet. God has clearly taught us in the Scriptures what we should and should not eat in order to be healthy. Let us examine some of these things.

In verse 4 we read that we are not to eat the camel because it chews cud but it doesn't divide the hoof and therefore, it is unclean to us. Then in verse 5 we read that we are not to eat the coney or rock badger either. Then in verse 6 God says that we shouldn't eat the hare. Also, we are not to eat the swine, which is the pig (verse 7). Then in verse 10 we can see that God doesn't want us to eat any sea creature that doesn't have fins or scales. According to verse 12, anything without fins or scales should be abhorrent and detestable to us.

Then in verses 13-20 there is a list of birds that we shouldn't eat: the eagle, the ossifrage, the ospray, the kite, the whole species of falcon, every kind of raven, the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, every species of hawk, the owl, the cormorant, the ibis, the swan, the pelican, the vulture, the stork, all kinds of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat. Also we are not to eat any winged insect that go upon all fours. In verses 29-30 we read that we are not to eat the weasel, the mouse, any kind of great lizard, the gecko, the land crocodile, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon. Those are the things that God has clearly instructed us not to eat.

So what are some of the things that we can eat? Well in verse 3 we read that we can eat whatever parts the hoof and is cloven-footed and chews the cud. Then in verse 9 we read that we can eat of all that are in the waters as long as it has fins and scales. Also in verse 21 we read that we can eat all winged insects that go upon all fours but have legs above their feet, such as locusts, bald locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers. In Matthew 3:4b we read that John the Baptist ate, "locusts and wild honey." In Deuteronomy 14:4-21 (a comparable chapter to this one in Levitucus) we read that we "may eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat. The hart, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep." (Deuteronomy 14:4-5).

Many things that the medical community teaches us concerning healthy eating are the very things that we read about in the Scriptures. For example, a dietician will tell you to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. But we can see that God has already instructed us to do so anyway. In Ezekiel 47:12d we read, "And their fruit shall be for food and their leaves for healing." Fruits act as a cleanser in our bodies, while vegetables act as builders of our bodies. Both are required for a healthy diet.

It is interesting to note that the context of healthy eating in this passage is framed with the command to be holy and consecrated unto the Lord. That was one way how the Israelites were able to separate themselves from this world and dedicate themselves to God. I know there's much that we can learn from this example for ourselves.
