Numbers 18:8, 21
"And the Lord said to Aaron, And I, behold, I have given you the charge of My heave offerings [that is, whatever is taken out and kept of the offerings made to Me], all the dedicated and consecrated things of the Israelites; to you have I give them [as your portion] and to your sons as a continual allowance forever by reason of your anointing as priests… And, behold, I have given the Levites all the tithes in Israel for an inheritance in return for their service which they serve, the [menial] service of the Tent of Meeting."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is the teaching and commandment that God gives us regarding the compensation of ministers. God has provided a way to provide for the ministers of the Gospel. It says here in verse 8 that of the offerings made to God, He has given a portion of it to Aaron and his household. So Aaron got an allowance for the ministry that he was doing in the temple. In Leviticus 7:34 we read, "For I have taken the breast that was waved and the thigh that was offered from the Israelites, out of the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons as their perpetual due from the Israelites." So the best part of the offering was given to Aaron, the priest and his household. The moment the priest ate from the sacrifice was the moment that the offering was received by God (Leviticus 10:17).

Then in verse 21 of Numbers 18 it says that God has given the Levites all the tithes in Israel for an inheritance in return for their service in the temple. In other words, the Israelites were to give their tithes and offerings. Then the Levites would get the best from the Israelites. Then the Levites would give from their best to the priest. That's the order that God ordained so that the ministers would be provided for. In verse 31, we read that this provision was their reward for their service in the temple.

In addition to receiving support from the tithes of the Israelites, the Levites also receive something else. In Numbers 35:3 we read, "They shall have the cities to dwell in and their [suburb] pasturelands shall be for their cattle, for their wealth [in flocks], and for all their beasts." So along with receiving provision for their service in ministry, the Levites also had a city that belonged to them. Each one of them had a house and a pastureland for their livestock. We can see here that the ministers of the Gospel are to devote themselves to their ministries and get fully paid for that.

This is the order that the Lord set into place for the Old Testament ministers to be provided for. But we can find a similar commandment in the New Testament as well. In Galatians 6:6-7 we read, "Let him who receives instruction in the Word [of God] share all good things with his teacher [contributing to his support]. Do not be deceived and deluded and misled; God will not allow Himself to be sneered at (scorned, disdained, or mocked by mere pretensions or professions, or by His precepts being set aside.) [He inevitably deludes himself who attempts to delude God.] For whatever a man sows, that and that only is what he will reap." In other words, when you and I support to those who teach us the Word of God, we are sowing a seed. It says here that whatever we sow, that and that only is what we will reap.

In 2 Corinthians 9:6 we read, "[Remember] this: he who sows sparingly and grudgingly will also reap sparingly and grudgingly, and he who sows generously [that blessings may come to someone] will also reap generously and with blessings." So the harvest that you and I are going to reap is really determined by the seed that we are going to sow, particularly into a ministry that reaches out to a lost world. So when we sow seeds into a ministry that reaches out to the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, then we will reap in relation to our sowing.

So let us be sowers into the ministry of God. Let us give to the preachers of the Gospel so that they can separate from secular work and go wherever God sends them to preach the Gospel. The support of the people of God will release the ministers of the Gospel to go and evangelize to the lost people of this world with the saving message of Jesus Christ. But not only that, when we support God's ministers, then we will reap exactly that which we have sown. That's the principle that God has ordained both for the people of the Old Testament, but also for us today. So let us be generous sowers!
