Leviticus 22:31
"So shall you heartily accept My commandments and conform your life and conduct to them. I am the Lord."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThe reason why we should obey God's commandments is because God is the Lord. It's very similar to what God said when God revealed Himself to Moses in Exodus 3:14, "And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM and WHAT I AM, and I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE; and He said, You shall say this to the Israelites, I AM has sent me to you!" In this verse, we can see that God's name contains the notion of past, present, and future, meaning God doesn't live or work in time. He always is. Because the Lord is God, we should do what this commandment in Leviticus 22:31 says. So let's examine what this verse says.

First this verse says, "So shall you heartily accept My commandments." So regardless of our environment or what others around us are doing on a daily basis, God wants us to heartily accept His commandments. That means to pay concentration and consideration to what He desires from us. He wants us to believe, recognize, and agree to all of His commandments with all of our hearts.

Then this verse says, "and conform your life and conduct to them." In other words, God wants us to line up our lives to His commandments. Every day we should ask ourselves, "How can I live my life in a way that conforms to the Word of God?" If we are faced with something that is not in line with the Word of God, then we are not to venture into it. Our entire lives and the way we conduct ourselves, meaning our thoughts, words, and actions, should all be conformed to God's commandments.

In Romans 12:2 we read, "Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you]." God is saying to us through the Apostle Paul that we should not be conformed to this world. But in Leviticus 22:31 we read that we should be conformed to the commandments of God. Also, we are to be transformed by the renewal of our minds, meaning we are to fill our minds with the new ideals and new attitudes that come from the Word of God.

In 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 we read, "For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds. [Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)."

When something that is contrary to the Word of God comes into our minds, it becomes a stronghold that keeps us from reaching our full potential in Christ. That stronghold needs to be broken. It doesn't matter what the imagination or thought is. If it is against or above the knowledge of God, then we are to bring those thoughts under the subjection of the lordship of Jesus Christ. That's what it means to renew our minds in the Word of God. When we renew our minds in God's Word, then it makes it easier for us to conform our lives and conduct to His commandments.

In Deuteronomy 29:9 we read, "Therefore keep the words of this covenant and do them, that you may deal wisely and prosper in all that you do." In other words, wise activity is a direct result of our obedience to the commandments of God. That wise activity and dilligence done on our part will bring prosperity into our lives. So whether or not you and I prosper and move ahead in life depends on the choices that you and I make. Those choices should be in conformity to the commandments of God.

God is not able to make us heartily accept His commandments and He cannot make us conform our lives and conduct to His will. Those are decisions that we have to make for ourselves. God clearly commands us to obey Him, but the onus of obeying Him is on us. So today, let's make the decision to obey God's Word. Let us heartily accept His commandments and conform our lives to them because as God says in this verse, "I am the Lord."
