REJOICE BEFORE GOD!

Date: November 13

Category: Divine Healing

Leviticus 23:40c
"And you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is such an interesting passage. God is commanding His people to rejoice before Him for seven days. In the Old Testament, the Jewish people were encouraged to celebrate all kinds of occasions. There were several different festivals througout the year which they celebrated in the temple of God. For these festivals, they sacrificed animals, offered some up to the Lord, gave some to the priest, and took some for themselves. They celebrated and had a joyous time.

We can see here that God wants us to enjoy our lives. But what are some of the things we can enjoy? Well throughout the Scriptures, we can find several passages that show us what we should be joyful for. First we are to rejoice over the Word of God. In John 15:11 we read, "I have told you these things, that My joy and delight may be in you, and that your joy and gladness may be of full measure and complete and overflowing." So Jesus spoke His words to us so that His joy would be in us and our joy would be complete. There is great joy in the Word of God. If you're ever lacking in joy, go to the Word of God. In Psalm 119:162 we read something very similar. "I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great spoil." The psalmist is rejoicing over the Word of God like one who finds great material things. So it's important to rejoice over the Word of God.

Something else that we should rejoice over is God Himself. It says in Psalm 35:9, "Then I shall be joyful in the Lord; I shall rejoice in His deliverance." We should rejoice in God because He delivers us from every evil. Not only that, but He's our Saviour. In Psalm 9:14b we read, "I will rejoice in Your salvation and Your saving help." Also in Psalm 31:7a it says, "I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy and steadfast love." So we rejoice in God Himself because He is our deliverer, our Saviour and because of His steadfast love and mercy toward us.

Also, we should rejoice over eternal life. In Luke 10:20 it says, "Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are enrolled in heaven." Now that we have accepted Jesus Christ into our hearts as Lord and Saviour, our names have been written in the Book of Life. Our future is connected with heaven. We have the assurance of eternal life. That is such a wonderful reason for us to rejoice before God.

Another thing we can rejoice over is our spouse. In Isaiah 62:5 we read, "For as a young man marries a virgin [O Jerusalem], so shall your sons marry you; and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you." So a bridegroom should rejoice over his bride because that's the way that God rejoices over us. Then in Proverbs 5:18b it says, "And rejoice in the wife of your youth." When you look at the context of Proverbs 5, you can see that it talks about making love with your wife. So God intended for us to enjoy our spouse and make love with each other.

Also we are to rejoice over our children. In Proverbs 23:25 we read, "Let your father and your mother be glad, and let her who bore you rejoice." Our children should be a source of pleasure to us. We should be glad over our children and our parents should be glad over us.

Another thing we can rejoice over is harvest. In Isaiah 9:3c we read, "They rejoice before You like the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil [of battle]." There is great joy in harvest. When you do your job well and you receive a paycheque, it's appropriate to rejoice over that. Success and increase are reasons for us to be glad. Also in Ecclesiastes 9:7a we read, "Go your way, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a cheerful heart." So God wants us to enjoy our food as well.

There are many things that we can be joyful about. God has given us great blessings to rejoice over and He has commanded us to rejoice before Him. So every morning when you wake up, rejoice before the Lord! If you don't feel like you have anything to rejoice over, go and read Psalm 118:24. There it says, "This is the day which the Lord has brought about; we will rejoice and be glad in it." Even another day that God gives us is a blessing from Him and a reason for us to rejoice!
