REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY

Date: November 9

Category: Follow God

Exodus 20:8-10a
"[Earnestly] remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy (withdrawn from common employment and dedicated to God). Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiOf the Ten Commandments, this is the fourth. The first four commandments deal with our relationship with God, and the last six deal with our relationship with people. This is the last commandment that deals with our relationship with God. Our relationship with God, which is a vertical relationship, is the most important relationship we have. That vertical relationship with God affects our horizontal relationship with people. So how you relate to God on a vertical level will determine how you relate to people on a horizontal level. Your relationship to God is the basis for relating to people. If you don't know how to relate to God, then you won't know how to relate to people. That's why the first four commandments deal with our vertical relationship with God.

It says here in the fourth commandment that we should, "[earnestly] remember the Sabbath day." The Sabbath day is the day of rest. In Genesis 2:3 we read, "And God blessed (spoke good of) the seventh day, set it apart as His own, and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all His work which He had created and done." We read something very similar in Exodus 20:11, "For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it [set it apart for His purposes]." So we can see from these passages that God gives us six days to work. The seventh day is a day of rest that God blesses and sanctifies.

In Exodus 34:21 we read, "Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest [on the Sabbath]." So God forbade any work on the Sabbath even in the most hurrying times, which was harvest time. So on that day, there should be a complete rest from all of our daily business. The Sabbath day is a blessed day and a sanctified day. During that day, we are not to do any work so that we could be set a part to do what God wants to be done.

During WWII when the Nazi planes were attacking Britain, some of the British people thought it would be better to work seven days a week as opposed to just six so that they could produce more weapons. They decided to do that. Soon afterwards, they realized that they were producing fewer weapons when they worked seven days because the workers were tired and less productive. They needed that day of rest in order to work productively. That's why it's so important that we take that day of rest.

But what should we do on the seventh day? Well we should dedicate it to God. The seventh day should be a special time that we devote to God. That's the time that we go to church to worship the Lord with other believers. That's the time that we read more of the Scriptures than we usually do, and that's the time that we should spend with our families. Not only that, but it's a time to reflect on the previous six days to see if we've been pleasing to God, and it's a time to ask ourselves what we can do in the following six days to be pleasing to God. God wants us to separate that day and make it holy, meaning we use that time to do the business that God wants to be done in our lives.

The reason why we should rest on the seventh day is because the Lord Himself rested on the seventh day after He made the heavens and earth. So if God, the Creator of heaven and earth, needed to rest on the seventh day, so do you and I. We are to keep that day holy and set apart for God's purposes. After dedicating six days of our week to our business, it's wonderful to have one day that we can dedicate to Christ.
