Revelation 18:15a
"The dealers who handled these articles, who grew wealthy through their business with her."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn this chapter, God is prophesying the fall of Babylon. But in this particular verse, there is an interesting statement about how people became wealthy during that time. Through this example and several others throughout the Bible, we can learn what it takes for us to become wealthy today. It says here that the dealers who handled these articles grew wealthy through their business. In verse 12 we read, "Their merchandise is of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls; of fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet [stuffs]; all kinds of scented wood, all sorts of articles of ivory, all varieties of objects of costly woods, bronze, iron, and marble." Those are just some examples of their material goods. The interesting thing to notice here is that what caused them to become so wealthy was the trade that they conducted.

In Ezekiel 27:12, 13 and 22 we read, "Tarshish [in Spain] carried on traffic with you because of the abundance of your riches of all kinds; with silver, iron, tin, and lead they traded for your wares. Javan (Greece), Tubal, and Meshech [in the mountainous region between the Black and Caspian Seas] traded with you. They exchanged the lives of men [taken as slaves] and vessels of bronze for your merchandise…The merchants of Sheba and Raamah [in Arabia] traded with you; they exchanged for your wares the choicest of all kinds of spices and all precious stones and gold." So the way these people became wealthy was through trade as well.

We can see that this is true even today. Countries become wealthy because of trade. Companies become wealthy because of trade. Businesses trade products and services to people for money. McDonald's is a prime example of this. They sell hamburgers that you and I buy and they become wealthy. Walmart sells many different products that you and I purchase and through those transactions, they become wealthy. Successful people are successful because of trade. There has to be some kind of transaction that takes place. We can see in Revelation 18:15a and through the examples in Ezekiel 27 that the dealers who traded are the people who became successful.

Each and every one of us has some kind of skill that we can use to produce a product or provide a service that is useful to others. But you have to determine what skill you have and how you can use that skill effectively. It's also important to create a product or a service that you know other people need. That requires research and work. If you don't do that, then there is no way you can be successful. Some people might have a great idea for an invention, but they don't create it. Some people might have a wonderful book in their heart, but they don't sit down to write it. Some people might have a wonderful gift in building, but they don't put their hands to work and build anything. If you don't work at whatever gift you have, it'll never work for you.

Not only is it important to have the right product, it's also important to be in the right place to promote your product. When you go into a rural area, you'll notice that there are fewer people who live there. When there are fewer people, there are fewer potential customers. On the other hand, when you go into an urban area, there are more people meaning there are more potential customers. Your location is a very important factor in your success. So you need both a good product and a good location.

All of this requires work. Success doesn't come knocking at your door asking you to invite it into your life. Success takes work. It says in Deuteronomy 8:18, "But you shall [earnestly] remember the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day." It doesn't say here that God gives you wealth. It says that God gives you the power to get wealth. In other words, you are the one who creates wealth through your work, by trading with other people.

Now these Babylonians were godless people. In verse 6 we read, "Repay to her what she herself has paid [to others] and double [her doom] in accordance with what she has done. Mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed [for others]." God says that He is going to punish them because they mistreated the people of God. So it's important to remember that as we do our business, we should still be moral and conduct our business in a godly way that is pleasing to the Lord.
