1 John 3:14
"We know that we have passed over out of death into Life by the fact that we love the brethren (our fellow Christians). He who does not love abides (remains, is held and kept continually) in [spiritual] death."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiWhat a powerful truth! It says here that we know we have passed from death into life. But how do we know that? Well we know that by the fact that we love the brethren, our fellow Christians. We have "agape" love for our brothers and sisters in Christ because the love of God is within us. Then we read here that the person who does not love abides in spiritual death. In other words, if you and I do not love others, then we have not really passed over from death into life. We are still spiritually dead.

Verses 17-18 teach us how we should show that love to others. "But if anyone has this world's goods (resources for sustaining life) and sees his brother and fellow believer in need, yet closes his heart of compassion against him, how can the love of God live and remain in him? Little children, let us not love [merely] in theory or in speech but in deed and in truth (in practice and in sincerity)." So when we see a fellow believer who does not have the essentials for living and we are able to help, then we should share of what we have to help those in need. But if we don't help others, then it is evident that the love of God is not within us.

We can't just love people by our words. We need to show deeds of love as well. You can't just say, "I'll pray for you," to a brother who needs food. Showing the love of Christ would be to give that brother food to eat. It's the same with clothing, medicine, shelter, etc. It's our duty to help those in need, particularly those who have become victims of natural disasters or wars, not people who are poor because they're lazy.

Then in verse 23 we read, "And this is His order (His command, His injunction): that we should believe in (put our faith and trust in and adhere to and rely on) the name of His Son Jesus Christ (the Messiah), and that we should love one another, just as He has commanded us." Faith in God always finds its true expression in love for His people. Those are the two commandments we are given here: have faith in God and love one another. That faith in God has to find its flow of existence in the form of love towards other Christians. So if you want to know if you've really passed over out of death into life (like we read in our verse today), then ask yourself if you are a loving person.

In chapter 4, verse 11 we read, "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is (springs) from God; and he who loves [his fellowmen] is begotten (born) of God and is coming [progressively] to know and understand God [to perceive and recognize and get a better and clearer knowledge of Him]." So we are commanded to love others because that love comes from God Himself. His love will benefit, bless, encourage, and help others. As we do that, we come to know and understand God more and more.

Then in verse 12 of chapter 4 we read, "No man has at any time [yet] seen God. But if we love one another, God abides (lives and remains) in us and His love (that love which is essentially His) is brought to completion (to its full maturity, runs its full course, is perfected) in us!" Not only does our knowledge of God grow when we love others, but also the love of God within us is perfected when we love others. If we don't share the love of God with others, then that love within us cannot grow and be perfected.

Then in verse 16 we read, "And we know (understand, recognize, are conscious of, by observation and by experience) and believe (adhere to and put faith in and rely on) the love God cherishes for us. God is love, and he who dwells and continues in love dwells and continues in God, and God dwells and continues in him." You can see that God's presence in your life is evident through your love towards others. Sometimes you may feel like God doesn't love you, but that's not the case. You may feel that way because of the lack of love you are showing towards others.

Every morning, the first question you should ask yourself is, "How can I express the love of God to someone today?" As soon as you ask yourself that, then you will begin to sense the presence of God in your life. You will recognize that God is with you because the love of God you show towards others is a sign that God abides in you. God is love. If we are truly children of God, then we will be children of love. So that means the love of God within us has to be expressed through actions of love towards others.
