BECAUSE OF A SINGLE OFFERING

Date: October 25

Category: The Goodness of God

Hebrews 10:14-15a
"For by a single offering He has forever completely cleansed and perfected those who are consecrated and made holy. And also the Holy Spirit adds His testimony to us [in confirmation of this]."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a wonderful statement of what has happened through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament Jewish culture, the priest had to offer animal sacrifices for the remission of sin. But those animal sacrifices could never fully cleanse all humanity from their sins. That's why Jesus had to come and die on the cross of Calvary in order that the world might be saved. It says here in verse 14, "For by a single offering He has forever completely cleansed and perfected those who are consecrated and made holy." So those who have laid their trust, confidence, dependence, and faith on what Jesus has done are the people who have forever been completely cleansed and perfected.

So if you and I have accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, then now when God the Almighty Father looks upon us, He sees the blood of His Son. He sees that we have been completely cleansed. The sin and the guilt of sin have been removed as though we have never sinned before. Then it says in verse 15a, "And also the Holy Spirit adds His testimony to us [in confirmation of this]." The moment that you and I accepted Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit came into our hearts and added His testimony to us. That testimony of the Holy Spirit is what confirms to us that we have been completely cleansed from all unrighteousness through the blood of Jesus.

Then we read in verse 16b, "I will imprint My laws upon their hearts, and I will inscribe them on their minds (on their inmost thoughts and understanding)." So now we have been recreated into new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) and we have the law of God embedded into our hearts. Then in verse 17b we read, "And their sins and their lawbreaking I will remember no more." In other words, not only did God wash our sins away and embed His laws into our hearts and minds, but He has also forgotten all of our sins. The wonderful thing about God is that He has the power to forget our sins when we confess them to Him.

Then it says in verse 18, "Now where there is absolute remission (forgiveness and cancellation of the penalty) of these [sins and lawbreaking], there is no longer any offering made to atone for sin." So we don't have to offer up animal sacrifices anymore. We don't have to do something for the forgiveness of sins other than confess them to God (1 John 1:9). Then in verse 19b we read, "we have full freedom and confidence to enter into the [Holy of] Holies [by the power and virtue] in the blood of Jesus." In other words we have full access to come before the throne of grace and ask God for whatsoever we want to ask Him.

Then in verse 22b it says, "having our hearts sprinkled and purified from a guilty (evil) conscience and our bodies cleansed with pure water." So we have no need to feel guilty in the presence of God. If we do feel guilty, all we have to do is confess our sins and God will forgive us because of what Jesus has done on the cross. Our hearts have been sprinkled and purified now and our bodies have been cleansed with pure water.

Now that all that has taken place, we read in verse 23, "So let us seize and hold fast and retain without wavering the hope we cherish and confess and our acknowledgement of it, for He Who promised is reliable (sure) and faithful to His word." Now that our sins have been washed away, now that we have the law of God on our hearts, now that we have free access to God, this verse says that we should seize and hold fast to the hope and promises of God because He is faithful to His word. In other words, we can be fully confident that we can have what God said we could have.

It's so wonderful to know that we can have all the benefits of God because we have accepted Jesus Christ into our hearts. The forgiveness of sins, the complete cleansing of our guilt, the imprinting of God's laws on our hearts, the freedom to enter God's presence, and the ability to ask God for anything are all results of accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Those rights were given to us because of one sacrifice by One person. "For by a single offering He has forever completely cleansed and perfected those who are consecrated and made holy." (Hebrews 10:14)
