OBTAINING THE PROMISES OF GOD

Date: October 24

Category: The Goodness of God

Hebrews 3:19, 4:1
"So we see that they were not able to enter [into His rest], because of their unwillingness to adhere to and trust in and rely on God [unbelief had shut them out]. Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still holds and is offered [today], let us be afraid [to distrust it], lest any of you should think he has come too late and has come short of [reaching] it."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiIn the first verse we read, the writer talks about the Israelites. Then in the second verse we read, the writer compares the Israelites to us, the believers of today. It says here that the Israelites did not enter the place of rest (the Promised Land) because they were complaining in the desert. In Numbers 14:27b we read what God said to Moses and Aaron, "I have heard the complaints the Israelites murmur against Me. Tell them, As I live, says the Lord, what you have said in My hearing I will do to you." Because the Israelites murmured and complained in the wilderness, God ensured that every word they murmured came to pass. We read in Hebrews 3:19b, "because of their unwillingness to adhere to and trust in and rely on God [unbelief had shut them out]."

Your unbelief will stop God's promises from coming to pass in your life. That's why in Hebrews 4:1 the writer warns us that while the promise of entering God's rest is still offered today, "let us be afraid [to distrust it], lest any of you should think he has come too late and has come short of [reaching] it." God has promised us His rest, which is eternal life. He's promised us the forgiveness of sins, healing for our bodies, life in abundance, and many other great things. But those promises will only become experiences in our lives when we believe them.

On the other hand, if we don't believe those promises and we do what the Israelites did while they were in the wilderness then we will receive what the Israelites received. We'll receive all the negative complaints that we murmur. God has laid a principle in life called sowing and reaping. Every seed we sow will reap back some kind of fruit. If we sow seeds of faith, trust confidence, and belief, then we are going to reap the good promises of God that are attached to that seed. But if we sow seeds of disbelief, doubt, worry, and complaint, then we are going to reap the negative results that are attached to that seed.

It's interesting to read what the German translation, Hoffnung fuer Alle, (which means, ‘hope for all') says in verse 14a, "Therefore, we should place all things upon this in order that we don't miss our goal." In other words, we should do everything we can to reach our goal. In order to reach that goal, we need to obey the Word of God and believe the promises of God. So if your goal is healing, prosperity, success, and life with abundance, then there is something you need to do. God has a part and you have a part. God's part is to keep His promises. Your part is to believe His promises and obey His Word.

Obtaining God's promises in our lives requires our obedience and our faith. There should not be an ounce of doubt in our hearts concerning God's promises because doubt will eventually lead to rebellion, and rebellion is disobedience against God. When God promises us something, we have to be confident that He will fulfill those promises. Whether or not we experience all the goodness of God in our lives depends on our faith.

In conclusion, we read in 2 Corinthians 1:20a, "For as many as are the promises of God, they all find their Yes [answer] in Him [Christ]." So everything that God promised finds their "yes" answer in Christ. When you and I have Christ in our hearts and we walk in obedience to Him, all of the promises of God will be "yes" for us. Today let us be people who will walk in obedience and faith so that we can obtain the promises of God.
