FIRM AND UNSHAKEN

Date: October 23

Category: Trust in God

Hebrews 3:13-14
"But instead warn (admonish, urge, and encourage) one another every day, as long as it is called Today, that none of you may be hardened [into settled rebellion] by the deceitfulness of sin [by the fraudulence, the stratagem, the trickery which the delusive glamour of his sin may play on him]. For we have become fellows with Christ (the Messiah) and share in all He has for us, if only we hold our first newborn confidence and original assured expectation [in virtue of which we are believers] firm and unshaken to the end."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThese passages are a warning to us. In the previous verses, the example that was given is of the Israelites who hardened their hearts to God. Verse 8 says, "Do not harden your hearts, as [happened] in the rebellion [of Israel] and their provocation and embitterment [of Me] in the day of testing in the wilderness." Because the Israelites rebelled against God, He was very displeased with them. So the writer here warns us not to do the same thing. The Christians to whom this letter was written were being persecuted because they believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. Because of their faith in God, all kinds of negative things were happening to them to the point that they were tempted to give up on Christ. So the writer says here in verse 13a that instead of giving up, Christians should be urging, admonishing and encouraging each other on a daily basis so that our hearts won't be hardened.

Struggles and difficulties should not make us rebellious against God. Struggles should not cause us to go astray from God and take whatever Satan has to offer us. It says in verse 13b that everything Satan offers us is deceitful because he uses the delusive glamour of this world. For that reason, we should not give into Satan when we are going through struggles and difficulties.

Actually in 1 Peter 5:8 we read, "Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour." When Satan tempts you to commit a sin, his real purpose is to destroy you. Maybe that sin will look very attractive at that moment and maybe it'll provide you with some pleasure for a short time, but eventually the end result of sin is death and destruction.

That's why in 1 Peter 5:9 it says, "Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset – rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined], knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world." So God wants us to resist the devil and be firm believers unshaken until the end regardless of what storms of life we experience.

But not only will we save ourselves from being destroyed by sin when we hold on to our faith, we will also share in all Christ has for us. It says in Hebrews 3:14a, "For we have become fellows with Christ (the Messiah) and share in all He has for us." So because we are united with Christ, we now have all that Christ has to offer us – the fullness of the Holy Spirit, the provision of joy, strength, peace, prosperity, and everything else we may need to overcome every obstacle in our lives. That's why it's so important to hold on to our faith, as it says in verse 14b, "if only we hold our first newborn confidence and original assured expectation [in virtue of which we are believers] firm and unshaken to the end."

But whose decision is it to hold fast to faith? God will not hold on to our faith for us. That's something we have to do. We do that by encouraging one another every day so that our hearts will not be hardened into rebellion. When the storms of life come, how are you going to react? When the temptation of sin comes, what are you going to do with it? It's our decision whether or not we're going to hold firmly to our faith in Christ. When we decide to hold on to Christ no matter what, then we will be spared from the destruction of sin and share in all that Christ has to give us. But it all starts with our decision to hold firm to faith and stand unshaken until the end.
