DOING GOOD TOWARDS OTHERS

Date: October 22

Category: Godly Character

Titus 3:8
"This message is most trustworthy, and concerning these things I want you to insist steadfastly, so that those who have believed in (trusted in, relied on) God may be careful to apply themselves to honorable occupations and to doing good, for such things are [not only] excellent and right [in themselves], but [they are] good and profitable for the people."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis is a letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to Titus, who was a pastor on the island Crete in Asia Minor. In this verse Paul says, "This message is most trustworthy, and concerning these things I want you to insist steadfastly." In other words, Paul wanted Titus to really teach this message to the people and to really expect the people to obey. But what is the message that Paul wants Titus to steadfastly insist?

Well Paul then says, "that those who have believed in (trusted in, relied on) God may be careful to apply themselves to honorable occupations and to doing good." So Paul is talking about the believers here. He is instructing that all believers be careful to apply themselves (meaning to really put forth an effort) into an honorable occupation. So when you work somewhere, you are to give 100% of yourself. You are to do the best job you can even if you don't fully get paid for it or fully get respected for it. You should still work your best because you are really doing it unto the Lord.

Actually we read the same thing in Colossians 3:23-24, "Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men. Knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [and not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [real] reward. [The One Whom] you are actually serving [is] the Lord Christ (the Messiah)." So when you go to work, whether it is for yourself or for someone else, you are really working for God. It's not just preachers, missionaries, and ministers who are working for God. As believers, we are all working for the Lord, no matter what kind of work we have. Because of that, the Lord is the One who will reward us.

But what is the purpose for the occupation we have? Well our work allows us to provide for our own needs and for the Kingdom of God, but also our work is for the purpose of doing good. Paul then says to Titus, "for such things are [not only] excellent and right [in themselves], but [they are] good and profitable for the people." So our work should not only bring provision for our needs, but our work should bring blessing to other people. God does not want us to just work and satisfy ourselves. He wants us to take care and bless other people in our lives – from those who are the closest to us to those who are the farthest. We are not in this world just for ourselves. We should all be creating opportunities to bless others.

In Titus 3:14 we read, "And let our own [people really] learn to apply themselves to good deeds (to honest labor and honorable employment), so that they may be able to meet necessary demands whenever the occasion may require and not be living idle and uncultivated and unfruitful lives." So applying ourselves to good deeds is something we learn. It isn't something that happens overnight. We learn by asking others around us what they need and then asking ourselves what we can do to meet those needs. So doing good deeds requires learning. But once we learn that, then we will be able to meet necessary demands whenever they arise. When we help others, our lives will become cultivated and fruitful.

Jesus said in John 15:2, "Any branch in Me that does not bear fruit [that stops bearing] He cuts away (trims off, takes away); and He cleanses and repeatedly prunes every branch that continues to bear fruit, to make it bear more and richer and more excellent fruit." So if you and I are not fruitful people, then God is going to cut us off. That's why God has connected us to Jesus, who is the True Vine, so that we will be fruitful in our lives through good deeds towards others.

In Hebrews 13:16 it says, "Do not forget or neglect to do kindness and good, to be generous and distribute and contribute to the needy [of the church as embodiment and proof of fellowship], for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." Not only do our good works make us fruitful and cultivated but also our good works are pleasing to God. God gets blessed when we bless others. That's why it's so important to apply ourselves to good deeds. There are needs everywhere in the world, and you and I have been uniquely created by God and have been endowed with great abilities to reach out and help those in need.
