THE WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE

Date: October 15

Category: Divine Healing

2 Corinthians 10:4-5
"For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds. [Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThese are very powerful verses! The warfare that we are in is not a physical war, but a spiritual one. That's why Paul says here that the weapons of our warfare are not physical, meaning they're not made of flesh and blood. These weapons are spiritual and mighty before God. But what are these weapons? Well our weapon is the Word of God! God has given us His Word, which is sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). The words that God speaks are our weapons of warfare.

So what are these weapons for? Well verse 4b says, "for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds." A stronghold is something that strongly holds a person into something that is contrary to the will of God. So our weapon, which is the Word of God, is used to overthrow and destroy every stronghold that keeps us from the will of God. But there is something else that our weapons are used for as well. Verse 5a says, "[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God." You cannot refute these arguments with physical weapons, only spiritual weapons. You defeat every argument that tries to come against God by using the Word of God. That includes every theory, every bit of reasoning and every idea that tries to set itself against the true knowledge of God.

I once knew an Italian minister, who I often spent time encouraging. At one point, he became very discouraged. He felt neglected by other pastors, and he felt like the church he was leading wasn't growing much. Satan used those thoughts to put him in a stronghold so that he could not be free from those negative thoughts. But one day as I was encouraging him, I suggested that he take a piece of paper and list every single discouraging thought that he had on one side of the paper. Then I told him to go through the Bible and write down verses that opposed every single discouraging thought on the other side of the paper. As he did that, he became so inspired and uplifted in his spirit. What he was doing was refuting every argument, theory, and idea from Satan by using the truths found in the Word of God.

Then we read in verse 5b, "and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)." So not only do we use the weapon of the Word of God to refute every argument that is contrary to the true knowledge of God, but we also use that weapon to bring every single thought under the subjection of the lordship of Jesus Christ. That includes every thought you have about yourself and others. If you have negative feelings towards someone else, then you have to bring those feelings under the obedience of Christ. If you have thoughts about committing sin, then you have to bring those thoughts to the obedience of Christ. Everything we think and feel should be aligned with the Word of God.

That's why you should make Christ the supreme commander of your thoughts. So when your thoughts tell you, "I'm not good enough," say to yourself, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!" (Philippians 4:13) When your thoughts tell you, "Nobody loves me," say to yourself, "God loves me with an everlasting love!" (Jeremiah 31:3) If you've sinned and feel that you can't come to God, turn 1 John 1:9 and read what it says. "If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action]."

God has given us a wonderful weapon. He's given us the Word of God. So now it's up to us to use His Word to destroy every stronghold in our lives, to refute every argument against God's truth, and to bring every thought and purpose under the subjection of Christ. So let's take the Word of God and get it into our spirits, our hearts, and our minds because it is His Word that is our weapon for this spiritual warfare that we're in. Without the Word of God, we cannot live a victorious life.
