1 Corinthians 16:14
"Let everything you do be done in love (true love to God and man as inspired by God's love for us)."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiAccording to this commandment, the motivating force for everything that we do should be love. Agape love is the unconditional love that God has for us. One of the greatest revelations that I've had was when I was twenty-five years old. At that time, I had been a Christian for ten years. Prior to that was fifteen years without Christ, where I was always hungry for love. I lived in a dysfunctional home with parents who fought all the time. When I was twelve, my parents divorced. I always grew up desiring that my parents would love me. I became a Christian at fifteen years old, and for ten years after that, I was still hungry for love.

When I was twenty-five, I received a revelation from God that changed my life. At the time, I was studying theology in Giessen, Germany (about 60 km north of Frankfurt). I was in a church setting with other believers and we were singing a song. Some of the lyrics to the song were, "As God loved you in Christ Jesus, ye love one another." At that moment, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart, "Slobodan, as God in Christ loved and accepted you, you love and accept yourself." In other words, God gave me permission to love myself because He loved me. Through Christ, God showed me the ultimate expression of love – the sacrifice of His only begotten Son. That revelation was like a spiritual surgery upon my heart. From that moment onwards, I was no longer hungry for love. I knew I was loved and because of that, I was ready to fully love others.

So it says here in this verse, "Let everything you do be done in love (true love to God and man as inspired by God's love for us)." The moment we accept Christ into our heart is the moment we experience the greatest love we could ever experience. But until we experience the love of God in our lives, we cannot fully accept and love ourselves. If we do not fully and completely love ourselves, then we cannot love others. When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit pours the love of God into our hearts and we become channels of that love for other people. Romans 13:9c says, "You shall love your neighbour as [you do] yourself." So the standard of how you should love your neighbour is how you love yourself. But the standard of how you should love yourself is how God loves you. So really, you are to love your neighbours the way God loves you.

So in our verse today we read that everything we do should be done in love. So before you open your mouth to say something to someone ask yourself, "Is what I'm about to say in context to love?" If the answer is "no," then don't say it because everything you do should be done in love. That includes everything you say. Before you put your hands to do something to someone ask yourself, "Is what I'm about to do going to be done in love?" If the answer is "no," then don't do it. Make sure that everything you do is done in love.

It says in 2 Thessalonians 3:5, "May the Lord direct your hearts into [realizing and showing] the love of God and into the steadfastness and patience of Christ and in waiting for His return." In other words, you and I should be realizing and showing the love of God to others. We do that by allowing God to direct our hearts. God wants to make us into people of love because God is love (1 John 4:8b).

In 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a we read about what love is, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." (NIV) That is the love that God has towards us, and that is the love that we should have towards others and ourselves. So today, let us be imitators of God and let us do everything in love.
