Luke 11:9-10
"So I say to you, Ask and keep on asking and it shall be given you; seek and keep on seeking and you shall find; knock and keep on knocking and the door shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks and keeps on asking receives; and he who seeks and keeps on seeking finds; and to him who knocks and keeps on knocking, the door shall be opened."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThese two verses are very powerful verses. As you study their context, you can see that before these verses, Jesus taught His disciples about prayer. For example, in verses 2-4 He taught them how to pray. Then in verses 5-8, He uses an example to show how powerful persistence in prayer is. In verse 5, He tells them a story about a man who knocked on the door of his friend asking to borrow three loaves of bread. Then in verse 7 it says that the friend refused to open the door because it was midnight and he was already in bed. But then in verse 8 we read, "I tell you, although he will not get up and supply him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his shameless persistence and insistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs."

So through this example, Jesus teaches us that when we ask for something, we should remain shamelessly persistent and insistent as we ask. Eventually our perseverance will enable us to receive whatever we have asked for, just like the man who received bread because he was persistent as he knocked on the door of his friend so late at night.

Then when you study the passages after these verses, you can see that Jesus uses the example of a father and a son. In verses 11-12, Jesus says that if a son asks his father for bread, the father would not give him a stone instead. He would not give him a serpent for a fish, or a scorpion for an egg. A father would give his son whatever he has asked for. Verse 13 says, "If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good gifts [gifts that are to their advantage] to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask Him!"

So through this example, Jesus teaches us that even as earthly fathers can give good gifts to their children, our Heavenly Father is capable and willing of giving greater gifts to us. But that's only if we ask and continue to ask. That's the key lesson to learn in this teaching: persistence. No one has ever achieved anything in life without being persistent. Winners never quit and quitters never win. That's exactly what Jesus is teaching us here.

Jesus says, "keep on asking… keep on seeking… and keep on knocking." When we come into the presence of God and ask Him for something, we have to ask with persistence. That doesn't mean just asking once. It means asking again and again and not stopping until we receive what we've asked for because verse 10a says, "For everyone who asks and keeps on asking receives." If, for example, you are seeking for something, you have to keep on seeking for it until you find it. Your persistence will enable you to find what you're seeking for because verse 10b says, "he who seeks and keeps on seeking finds." If you want a door to be opened to you (for example, school or a job), you have to knock and continue knocking, just like the story of the man who wanted bread. Eventually the door will open because verse 10c says, "to him who knocks and keeps on knocking, the door shall be opened."

Shameless persistence and insistence is the key principle that Jesus wants us to learn here. No matter what it is you want in life, keep on asking, seeking, and knocking. Keep on doing everything you need to do to achieve what you want in life. That's how success comes. The most successful people in the world are those who have never given up. I remember that there was a time that I wanted to quit the ministry because there was hardly enough money coming in to do the work. But I decided to give it one more try and my wife and I continued to do the things we needed to do. We kept on praying and believing God, and because of that persistence, the ministry began to prosper and God enabled us to reach thousands of people with the saving message of Jesus Christ and with humanitarian aid.

So every goal you will ever reach and every level of success you will ever achieve will all be a result of your hard work and your shameless persistence and insistence. When you are persistent in the things you ask for, seek for, and the doors you knock at, eventually you will receive the things that you desire. This is what Jesus is teaching us here because remember: winners never quit and quitters never win. Be persistent!
