TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU

Date: September 19

Category: Follow God

Matthew 11:30
"For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good – not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiA yoke is something that holds two things together. For example, when two cows are put into one yoke, they are pulled in the same direction. Wherever one cow goes, the other cow goes as well because they are yoked together. So in the prior verse, Jesus tells us "Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me…" (verse 29a) In other words, Jesus wants us to yoke ourselves with Him and learn the things that He wants to teach us. He wants us to heed to His instructions and obey Him. If we, as believers, really take this verse to heart and take upon Jesus' yoke, then we will avoid many of life's problems and pitfalls.

For example, God tells us that husbands and wives should be faithful to one another. Hebrews 13:4 says, "Let marriage be held in honor (esteemed worthy, previous, of great price, and especially dear) in all things. And thus let the marriage bed be undefiled (kept undishonored); for God will judge and punish the unchaste [all guilty of sexual vice] and adulterous." We should heed to this commandment and obey what God says. When we obey that commandment, then our yoke becomes easier and our burden becomes light because our marriage will be successful. But when we disobey God and are not faithful to our spouses and we develop an emotional and physical relationship with somebody else, then that will create a wall in our marriage. Eventually that will lead to a divorce. If it doesn't lead to a divorce, then it will lead to many struggles and difficulties that could have been avoided if we had only listened and obeyed God.

This is also true concerning our relationship with our children. God has given us our children so that we could take care of them, teach them, and train them. He didn't give us our children so that others could take care of them, or that the world could teach them and train them. No, God gave us, as parents, the primary responsibility of teaching our children. It says in Malachi 4:6, "And he shall turn and reconcile the hearts of the [estranged] fathers to the [ungodly] children, and the hearts of the [rebellious] children to [the piety of] their fathers [a reconciliation produced by repentance of the ungodly], lest I come and smite the land with a curse and a ban of utter destruction."

This is a commandment from God. Fathers are to turn their hearts towards their children and vice versa. Parents are to take time, effort, and energy to teach their children the right way of life. But if we, as parents, don't obey this commandment, then our children will go astray and get involved with things they shouldn't get involved in. And that brings on more struggles and difficulties for both the parents and the children. However, when you take on Jesus' yoke and listen to this commandment, then you will avoid those kinds of problems.

Another example is in terms of our finances. In Romans 13:8a we read, "Keep out of debt and owe no man anything, except to love one another." But often, we don't always heed to this instruction and many of us get into all sorts of debts – for cars, education, houses, vacations, etc. Eventually that causes great hardships in our finances, our marriage and our family. Having a debt over your life is a very heavy burden that cannot be lifted off you until that debt has been completely paid off. That's why God instructs us to keep out of debt and owe no man anything. Taking upon Jesus' yoke and learning from Him would mean obeying this instruction. Doing so will allow us to avoid the stress that debt brings upon our lives.

Today's Bible verse says that Jesus' yoke is easy and His burden is light. That's why He tells us to take upon His yoke and learn from Him. He wants us to go where He goes and follow what He does. He wants us to listen to His commandments and obey each and every one of them. Why? So that we will avoid the many pitfalls of life! Many of life's difficulties can easily be avoided if we just listen and obey the Word of God. So today, let's take upon Jesus' yoke and let's learn from Him!
