KNOWN BY YOUR FRUITS

Date: September 14

Category: Godly Character

Matthew 7:16, 20-21, 24
"You will fully recognize them by their fruits. Do people pick grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?"… Therefore, you will fully know them by their fruits. Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven… So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts upon them [obeying them] will be like a sensible (prudent, practical, wise) man who built his house upon the rock."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThese verses are from the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus is teaching us here about bearing fruit. The same way a tree bears fruit, our lives bear fruit as well. The fruit that comes from a tree shows us what kind of tree that is. So the kind of fruit that you produce in your life will show others what kind of person you are. In verse 16a we read, "You will fully recognize them by their fruits." Here Jesus is talking about false prophets and false teachers. Verse 15 says, "Beware of false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep, but inside they are devouring wolves." Those are the people who teach false doctrine. Anyone can be a false prophet or teacher. But Jesus said that we would recognize them by their fruits. The rest of verse 16 says, "Do people pick grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?" If you pick up a fig fruit, then you know that it came from a fig tree.

Then in verse 20 it says, "Therefore, you will fully know them by their fruits." So you will recognize a person by the fruits that he/she produces. So if you want to see if a person is really a Christian, then examine their fruits. A fruit represents a result or an outcome. Fruit in a person's life represents their actions and their words. So if a person says that he is a Christian but he smokes and drinks, uses drugs or is immoral, then you can tell that person is not a real Christian. Those fruits are wicked fruits meaning those actions are wicked. So if a person produces those kinds of fruit, you can tell that they are not of the same tree. They are not true believers.

Then it says in verse 21, "Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven." So doing the will of the Heavenly Father determines who will go to heaven and who will not. So not everyone who says to Jesus, "Lord, Lord" will enter heaven. Only those who do what pleases God can enter heaven. But none of us can do what pleases God until we have been forgiven of our sins and washed in the blood of Jesus. When our hearts have been changed, then we will be able to do the will of God and enter the kingdom of heaven. So doing what pleases God is what indicates who is really saved and who isn't. Those actions do not save us. Accepting Jesus Christ into our hearts and being washed in His blood is what saves us. Those God-pleasing actions are the fruit (the result) of having been saved. That's the kind of fruit Christians should bear.

Now that we are saved, we have to start bearing fruit in our lives to show our new nature. That's how others will recognize Christ within us. So Jesus says here that we can call upon the Lord but if we don't do the will of God, then we will not enter heaven. Then it says in verse 24, "So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts upon them [obeying them] will be like a sensible (prudent, practical, wise) man who built his house upon the rock." So if we want to build our house upon the rock, then we have to listen to the Word of God and obey the Word of God.

If you and I are not willing to do what God wants to be done, then we can't expect to be saved. It says here that only those who listen to the Word of God and do the Word of God are the ones with their houses built upon the rock. When difficulties come and when things don't work out the way you want them to, you can still stand firm because you have an anchor in the Word of God. You believe God no matter what anybody else says. This is true as well when other people talk against you. When people tell you that you're not good enough or what you're trying to accomplish can't be done, just be confident that nothing is impossible for God. Base your thoughts and actions on what God says in His Word. It doesn't matter what anybody else says. It doesn't even matter what you feel. When you obey what God says, you are going to build a strong life and produce good fruit that will bring glory to the Lord.
