A BLESSING IN EXCHANGE FOR A CURSE

Date: September 8

Category: Divine Healing

Zechariah 8:15-17
"So again have I purposed in these days to do good to Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. Fear not! These are the things that you shall do: speak every man the truth with his neighbor; render the truth and pronounce the judgment or verdict that makes for peace in [the courts at] your gates. And let none of you think or imagine or devise evil or injury in your hearts against his neighbor, and love no false oath, for all these things I hate, says the Lord."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis chapter is about God promising to bless the nation of Israel again after He had punished them. In verse 4 we read, "Thus says the Lord of hosts: Old men and old women shall again dwell in Jerusalem and sit out in the streets, every man with his staff in his hand for very [advanced] age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets." This is a picture of true blessing. According to these verses, a picture of blessing is of old men and old women living in the city again sitting outside, while children are playing in the streets. In our time, that would be like parents sitting on the porch watching their children play in the front yard. That's a picture of blessing.

Then we read in verse 13, "And as you have been a curse and a byword among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so will I save you, and you shall be a blessing. Fear not, but let your hands be strong and hardened." So here God promised the children of Israel that He was going to change their life situation from a curse into a blessing. Because God was going to change their situation, there was no longer any reason for them to be afraid. It says in verse 15, "So again have I purposed in these days to do good to Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. Fear not!" But before that blessing could become a reality in their lives, there were specific things that they needed to do. If you and I want God to change our situation from a curse into a blessing, then these are the things that we need to do as well.

Verse 16 says, "These are the things that you shall do: speak every man the truth with his neighbor; render the truth and pronounce the judgment or verdict that makes for peace in [the courts at] your gates." So the first thing that we have to do is speak the truth. The truth must first be spoken to our spouses. Your spouse is the most important person in your life after Christ. You have to be honest with your spouse all the time. Trust is the basis of loving one another in a marriage. Also, parents are to speak truth to their children and children are to speak truth to their parents. That's the next most important relationship in your life. We should always speak truth to people. Honesty is very important. Then it says that we are to render the truth and pronounce the judgment or verdict that makes for peace. In other words, aside from speaking truth, we also have to render it, meaning we have to bring it about in our relationships with people. Everything that we do should always be truthful. Also we are to live in peace with others. In Romans 12:18 we read, "If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everybody." So we are to have peace with everybody, as much as it depends on us.

Then in verse 17 we read, "And let none of you think or imagine or devise evil or injury in your hearts against his neighbor, and love no false oath, for all these things I hate, says the Lord." So we shouldn't think about or plot any evil against anybody. God doesn't want us to harm anyone, either with our actions or even with our words. Also, it says that we are not to love any false oath. For example, if a husband and wife have become disloyal toward one another by committing adultery, then they have betrayed their oath. A false oath is a broken promise. We are not to love false oaths because it says here that God hates them. God wants us to be truthful, and He wants us to be faithful. The truth should be the basis of everything that we do.

In John 6:63b Jesus said, "The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life." In John 14:6 we read, "Jesus said to him, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me." So Jesus personifies truth. We can see that truth is found in Jesus and the Word of God.

Since we should always speak truth, then it means we should always speak the Word of God. Since we should always render truth, then it means we should always do the Word of God. That's what the Lord requires from us. Along with that, we are also to live at peace with one another, devise no evil against each other, and hate false oaths just as He hates false oaths. So today, let's heed to this instruction and let's do what God requires of us because in order to receive a blessing in exchange for a curse, we have to obey this word of God.
