Habakkuk 3:17-19
"Though the fig tree does not blossom and there is no fruit on the vines, [though] the product of the olive fails and the fields yield no food, though the flock is cut off from the fold and there are no cattle in the stalls, Yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will exult in the [victorious] God of my salvation! The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds' feet and will make me to walk [not to stand still in terror, but to walk] and make [spiritual] progress upon my high places [of trouble, suffering, or responsibility]!"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThe book of Habakkuk is an interesting book. Habakkuk may have witnessed the fall of Assyria (the nation that destroyed Israel) and also the rise of the Babylonian kingdom. One of the key teachings that he gives is that the just will live by faith. Our study verses today are the last verses of the book of Habakkuk and they are quite impressive.

In verse 17, Habakkuk describes the situation that he finds himself in. "Though the fig tree does not blossom and there is no fruit on the vines, [though] the product of the olive fails and the fields yield no food, though the flock is cut off from the fold and there are no cattle in the stalls." We can see that the situation wasn't good.

But here it says that even if that is the case, even if the economy is shattered in our lives, even if we go through difficult storms and trials, we should not let those conditions to dictate how we feel inside. Verse 18 says, "Yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will exult in the [victorious] God of my salvation!" So even though the situation around Habakkuk was very negative, he still had a positive outlook. He still rejoiced in the Lord. He didn't rejoice in his lack of money; he rejoiced in the Lord! When bad things happen to you, you don't rejoice over those bad things. But even though you're in a bad situation, you still have the Lord. So that's why you should always rejoice in Him.

Then in verse 19 we read, "The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds' feet and will make me to walk [not to stand still in terror, but to walk] and make [spiritual] progress upon my high places [of trouble, suffering, or responsibility]!" Maybe you don't feel like you have much strength all the time. But this word says that God is your strength. So you can face any challenge and complete any task because of the Lord's strength. Not only that, but He's also your personal bravery, meaning He gives you courage to overcome your obstacles. God is also your invincible army! The word, "invincible" means unshakable and unconquerable. So the Lord is the unshakeable army that is fighting on your side. He will give you strength and bravery, but now everywhere you go as you trust in the LORD, you will have an invincible army of God behind you. Then it says that God will make your feet like hinds' feet and will make you to walk and not to stand in terror. So you won't be fearful because God will equip your feet with the ability to walk with confidence. When you are fearful, you will do exactly what it says here – stand in terror. But because you have the Lord on your side, you won't be afraid.

Along with that, God will make spiritual progress upon your high places of trouble, suffering and responsibility. In other words, after giving you the strength, the courage, the invincible army, and the ability to walk, God will give you the victory! The only way you can be victorious over a spiritual challenge in your life is by having the Lord on your side. You can't do it any other way. You need to have God's guidance, His power, and His Holy Spirit fighting on your behalf in order to be victorious.

In the midst of Habakkuk's challenge, he started to praise the Lord, the God of his salvation. Then he started to confess positive things in his life. He confessed that God was his strength, his personal bravery, and his invincible army. In other words, he confessed that God was on his side. So today let's remember that the Lord is with us. Let's praise Him in every situation we are in, and let's declare that He has equipped us with the ability to become victorious. We can overcome any challenge we face because the God of our salvation is on our side!
