WHEN EVILNESS COMES

Date: September 4

Category: Trust in God

Micah 7:5-6
"Trust not in a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Keep the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom. For the son dishonors the father, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law – a man's enemies are the men (members) of his own house."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis word was spoken during a time of social injustice within the nation of Israel. People were doing wrongful things to one another, and there was a lot of wickedness in the land. We can better understand verses 5-6 if we go back and read some of the previous verses. For example, the prophet Micah says in verse 2, "The godly man has perished from the earth, and there is none upright among men. They all lie in wait for blood; each hunts his brother with a net." So at the time, there was such great evilness among the people. There wasn't anyone righteous. Even in verse 3a we read, "Both their hands are put forth and are upon what is evil to do it diligently…" So everyone was engaging in sin and wickedness.

Actually, the Bible says that evilness is within all of our hearts. In Mark 7:21-22 we read, "For from within, [that is] out of the hearts of men, come base and wicked thoughts, sexual immorality, stealing, murder, adultery, coveting (a greedy desire to have more wealth), dangerous and destructive wickedness, deceit; unrestrained (indecent) conduct; an evil eye (envy), slander (evil speaking, malicious misrepresentation, abusiveness), pride (the sin of an uplifted heart against God and man), foolishness (folly, lack of sense, recklessness, thoughtlessness)." That is a description of evilness and it's the same evilness that existed during the time of Micah.

That's why in verse 5a Micah warns, "Trust not in a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend…" So the people couldn't depend on each other. Then in verse 5b it says, "Keep the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom." There was so much wickedness that people couldn't even trust their own spouses. The land was full of social injustice, meaning no one lived at peace with anyone, not even family members. Actually in verse 6 we can see that families were quickly deteriorating. "For the son dishonors the father, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law – a man's enemies are the men (members) of his own house."

We read something very similar in the New Testament in Matthew 10:21 as Jesus taught about the last days, "Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child; and children will take a stand against their parents and will have them put to death." Then in Matthew 10:36 we read, "And a man's foes will be they of his own household." We can see that Jesus repeated what Micah spoke in the Old Testament.

By connecting the words of both Micah and Jesus, we can see that our trust and our reliance should be on God. In Him we find strength when we're persecuted for Christ's sake. In Him we find refuge when we encounter various storms and trials. So in Him is where our trust should always lie. That's really what the prophet Micah was saying in verse 7, "But as for me, I will look to the Lord and confident in Him I will keep watch; I will wait with hope and expectancy for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me." So even in the midst of all the rejection from our family, friends, and neighbors, we can still hope and expect for God. He is the only One we can have full confidence in.

Enemies may try to rise against us, but we will be victorious through God. We can even declare verse 8 over our lives. "Rejoice not against me, O my enemy! When I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light to me." That is such a powerful proclamation! Our connection to strength, light, courage, and trust is found through our connection to God Himself. He is the source of everything that is good. So today, let's make sure we trust in God. Evilness may come, neighbors may fight, and families might be divided, but those things won't affect us because we trust in the God of our salvation!
