ACTIONS OF GOODNESS

Date: September 3

Category: The Goodness of God

Micah 6:8
"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and to love kindness and mercy, and to humble yourself and walk humbly with your God?"

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiWho is like the Lord? – That's what the name Micah means in Hebrew. Micah lived during the reigns of Ahaz, Jotham, and Hezekiah. He was also a contemporary of Isaiah. Micah saw the destruction of the northern kingdom by the Assyrians (Sargon II conquered Samaria in 722 B.C.), and he warns the southern kingdom (of Judah) that if they don't repent, then they will be destroyed as well. The wrath of God was going to fall on them because of the sinfulness of the leaders. Actually, the rulers, the prophets, and even the priests didn't reflect the fear of God in their responsibilities. As a result, they didn't live a life that is holy before God.

This verse is the most comprehensive and all embracing statement in the Old Testament. In other words, everything that the Old Testament teaches us is summed up into this one verse. We read here, "He has showed you, O man, what is good." So God has already shown us what is good. There is no excuse why we can't act in goodness because God has already taught us what it means to be good. God is the source and standard of all goodness, and He expects us to act that way as well. Then the verse says, "And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and to love kindness and mercy, and to humble yourself and walk humbly with your God?"

So what are some of the things that God wants us to do? Well there are three things mentioned here. First we are to do justly, meaning we are to have a standard of living that is honourable both in our relationship with God and our relationship with people. Living justly means to be in right standing with God. Being in right standing with God will enable us to be in right standing with people. In John 13:34 we read, "I give you a new commandment: that you should love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another." So the love of God the Father flows from His throne to Jesus. Then from Jesus, that love flows to us. Then from us, that love should continue to flow to others.

The second thing that God wants us to do is love kindness and mercy. Loving kindness and mercy means showing compassion toward other people. That is something that God requires of us because He has shown compassion toward us. We aren't supposed to keep grudges and resentment in our hearts. Instead we are to be kind, forgiving, and show mercy to people. Actually in Matthew 6:15 we read, "But if you do not forgive others their trespasses [their reckless and wilful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment] neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses." So when we show kindness and mercy to people, then God will show kindness and mercy back to us.

Then the third thing we have to do is humble ourselves, meaning we walk humbly with our God. So God wants us to be submissive to His will. Humbleness is expressed through obedience. For example, when you tithe your money, you are humbling yourself before God. When you acknowledge that God is sovereign, then you are humbling yourself before God. Humbleness means to find security and assurance in God, rather than finding it in youself. That's how God wants us to be. He wants us to walk humbly with Him.

This verse really captures what God required from the people of the Old Testament, but it describes what He requires from us today as well. So these are the three things that God wants from us: to do justly, to love kindness and mercy, and to humble ourselves before God. According to this passage, those are the things that convey goodness. The Lord has already shown us what is good. So now it's up to us to actually do what is good and what pleases God.
