WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE PEOPLE PERISH

Date: August 29

Category: Wisdom and Understanding

Hosea 4:6, 11
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you [the priestly nation] have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you that you shall be no priest to Me; seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children… Harlotry and wine and new wine take away the heart and the mind and the spiritual understanding."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiPeople fall into disastrous situations in their lives because of lack of knowledge, whether it is spiritually, relationally, financially, or in regards to their health. Without knowledge, people perish. Today, we live in an age of information. Those who have knowledge will move forward in life and be successful, while those who don't have knowledge will lack in life and fall behind. Knowledge is very important for success. Knowledge is power. When you increase in knowledge, then you'll increase in power as well.

One way of getting knowledge is by going to school. That's why we go to elementary school, high school, college, and university. We go to school to acquire knowledge. But even once we finish school, our learning doesn't stop there. We continue to learn as we enter the business world and start pursuing our careers. We go to school to learn how to learn. When we're done school, we learn to be successful in life.

For example, if you work for a company and you have to sell a product, you need to have knowledge about that product. Not only that, but you also have to know about the competition. Then you have to know how to outsell the competition. Then you actually have to do it. All of that is knowledge. If you don't have that knowledge then your company will fall behind, and your job will perish.

When people get involved in investments, they need to have knowledge about what they're investing into. Too many people have lost their money because they didn't understand the investment. A great investor named Warren Buffett from Berkshire Hathaway once said that he would never invest into anything he didn't understand. Because he didn't understand the technology stocks, he never invested into them. Instead he invested into things he had knowledge about. At the end of the 20th century, he became the second richest man in the world after Bill Gates. At the beginning of the 21st century when the technology stocks went down, he didn't lose anything because he didn't have anything invested into them. So knowledge is very important.

But most importantly, we need to have the knowledge of God. If we don't have Jesus in our hearts, then we too will perish. It says here, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." So we need to know God; we need to know the Word of God, and we need to serve God with all of our hearts. Otherwise, we will perish for that lack of knowledge.

Verse 6 then says, "because you [the priestly nation] have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you that you shall be no priest to Me." So the people at the time rejected knowledge. Because of that, God rejected them. But how did they reject knowledge? Well the rest of verse 6 says, "seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children." So the moment they rejected the law of God, that was the moment they rejected knowledge. Knowledge is found in the Word of God. And the moment they rejected knowledge, that was the moment that God rejected them. So what were they doing instead? Well we read in verse 11, "Harlotry and wine and new wine take away the heart and the mind and the spiritual understanding." Instead of seeking after knowledge, they were pursuing a sinful lifestyle, having sex with all kinds of different people and getting drunk with alcohol. As a result of those sinful ways, they lost heart, mind, and spiritual understanding. In other words, they began to die spiritually and that led to their destruction.

So it's important to learn from these verses. In order to keep ourselves from being destroyed, we must have knowledge. In order to gain knowledge, we must have Jesus and the Word of God in our hearts. When we accept the law of God, God will accept us. But if we reject His law, then He too will reject us. But once we have the Word in our hearts, we must obey it. That means staying away from sexual immorality, alcohol, and other sins. When we do that, we will have spiritual understanding to be successful in life, and we'll have knowledge to keep ourselves from perishing.
