THE REWARDS OF GOD

Date: August 5

Category: Hard Work and Diligence

Proverbs 22:4-5
"The reward of humility and the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life. Thorns and snares are in the way of the obstinate and willful; he who guards himself will be far from them."

Slobodan & Ljiljana KrstevskiThis teaching is about the rewards of humility and reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord. A reward is always a good thing. A reward is something that is given to us after we have first accomplished the task at hand. In this case, our tasks at hand are walking in humility and walking in reverence and worshipful fear of God. Once we do that, then we will receive the reward. Humility means humbleness. Humility describes a person who does not exalt himself above others. He is a person who is modest and meek. And he is a person who has reverence for the Lord, which means he respects God. The fear of God is a worshipful fear, meaning it is an adoration of God. You could replace the word, ‘fear' in this case with the word, ‘love' and you would still be accurate. This is a love for the Lord. Because you love the Lord, you're not going to do certain things that are displeasing to Him. Because you love Him, you're going to do the things that are pleasing to Him. That's the fear of God.

So if we walk humbly before God, not exalting ourselves above others and if we fear Him, meaning we do everything it takes to please Him, then we will receive certain rewards. Those rewards are riches, honor, and life. In this case, those riches aren't just spiritual/immaterial riches. It also means physical/material riches as well. Along with both spiritual and physical/material riches, you'll receive honor and life as a result of living a God-pleasing life. So if you are wondering if your life pleases God, check to see if your riches are increasing. Check to see if your honor is increasing, and check to see if you have the abundance of life. If you're not increasing in those areas, then there must be something wrong. The Word of God says here that the reward of humility and fear of God is riches, honor and life. That's what you can expect from God if you live a God-pleasing life.

For example, when we plant a seed in our gardens, we plant that seed already having in mind the type of fruit that will come from that seed. If you plant a tomato seed, then obviously you're going to expect a tomato to come from that seed. That's your expectation. So in this case, if you walk humbly before God and you fear Him, then you can expect to be rewarded with riches, honor, and life.

But there is also something else we must remember. In order to gain those things, we also have to work. Verse 5a says, "Thorns and snares are in the way of the obstinate and willful…" In other words, thorns and snares are in the way of the stubborn and the lazy. People who are lazy cannot expect to be blessed. If you don't work, then you cannot expect God to bless you. Walking humbly and fearing God also requires work. Then you will receive the rewards promised here. Going back to the example of the seed planted in the garden. It takes you getting down in the ground and planting that seed for it to bring back a fruit. It takes work!

In this first part of verse 5, we can see that lazy people don't prosper. For example, if you walk through a neighborhood and you notice that some of the neighbors have thorns and snares in their yard, then you can see that the person hasn't worked on his yard. Without work, the yard can't be clean and flourished. Then we read in verse 5b, "..he who guards himself will be far from them." So if you guard yourself from laziness and slothfulness then you will avoid the thorns and snares in your pathway. You can be sure that you will reap the rewards promised in this passage.

Naturally we are not lazy people. We were all created with the desire in our hearts to work and be productive. It's within our human nature to accomplish things in life. The only exception is when we're sick, then we don't feel so energetic. But once we recover, that energy comes back to us and we want to go back to work and be productive again. But the reason why some people become lazy is that they don't allow themselves to keep busy. They find themselves with nothing to do. With nothing to do, people become bored or sometimes depressed, and that leads to laziness. But if we protect ourselves from that, meaning if we continue working and progressing, then we will never fall into laziness.

So today, let's check our lives. Are you being productive today? Are you working and not acting slothfully? Are you living humbly before God and do you worshipfully fear Him? If you are doing all of those things, then you can expect to receive the rewards. You can expect to receive riches, honor, and life!
